Fuel Tank Size?

Fuel Tank Size?
Was wondering the fuel tank capacity in my 02 F250 V10 2wd long bed. Manual says 38 gallons. When I put in gas last night I was close to empty but the reserve light wasn't on yet, I put $80 in and it gave me 20 gallons ($3.91 gallon) and it went slightly above the 3/4 mark on the gauge. It seems as though if I added another $20 it would have been full, equaling a 29 gallon tank instead of a 38....
Any help?

As with all vehicles, the gauge is anything but linear, and empty is not "empty".
And in the LB trucks, it seems ridiculously not empty. Seems closer to 10 gallons left in my truck as I've run well into the "empty" and red light zone and never gotten more than 30 gallons in.
Some day (when I have spare gas on board!) I'll actually run it dry and see just how much is left at empty.

The gas gauges do vary. Both my truck and my dads truck have 29 gal tanks and the fuel gauge position and gallons used to fill varies. I drew my tank down a few times until the warning light came to test it and I could squeeze in 24 gallons so there is a decent reserve left. I often squeeze as much gas in the tank as I can. There are no sensors to worry about on the earlier SDs.

My '01 short-bed has a 28 gallon tank. Supposedly.
When I had to change the screw-down lock-ring on the top of the tank (I think a mouse was chewing on it, it looks like it had teeth marks on it), I ran the truck down all the way PAST when the low-fuel light was on.
I then proceeded to hook an electric fuel pump up to the output of the tank, and sucked 5 gallons out, switched containers, and then sucked at least another gallon or two out.
So, a total of 6 gallons, at least, when the light was on. And when that light is on, I can put 24 gallons in it at the pump. So, total of 30 gallons? eh?
What?
