SCT x3 questions (if you have used one please read)

Have any of you ever used an SCT X3? if so is it similar to the hypertech's with the prompted options and + / - style adjustments? if not how does it work. i spoke with tech support at sct and he said the x3 will work on my truck but doesnt have preloaded tunes. thats cool with me i just wanna make sure I can figure out how to use it when i get it. any info appreciated on the X3.

Thanks guys,
Marty

I'm very familiar with the XCal2 and the PRP (Advantage 3.0 / Livelink) software, as I use that regularly for tuning my XR7 and my GT. I've yet to mess with the X3, but I'll bet that it hasn't changed much.

IMO, unless you plan on ordering the PRP and writing your own tune files, you'll be better off getting the X3 from a tuner with a few preloaded tunes based on whatever mods you have rather than just buying a blank X3 directly from SCT. That will allow for far more changes to be made to the tune than you're able to access from the handheld alone. Either way, the handheld is pretty simple to operate.

It'll be a three or four digit/letter code on a white sticker on the PCM, right at the connector. I'm not sure if you can find it anywhere else on these trucks (on my GT, the code can also be found on a sticker in the passenger side door jam, so you don't have to pull the PCM to get the code).

I have a sticker in the same spot on my pickup, so could be there for others too.

I am assuming your truck is OBDII? Did ALL of the trucks switch to OBDII in '96 or were some early models still OBDI?

I have an XCAL 2 for my 97 Mustang. With the tuner, you'll be able to read the car's "Strategy Code" by plugging it in and selecting "Read DTS" or whatever. Then, you choose a good tuner (I went with Bamachips) and tell them your mods. They'll write you a tune and email it to you (Bamachips gave me 3 tunes for $50). You download the tune to the XCAL3 and load the tune to your truck.

I couldn't adjust anything until I actually had a tuner write a tune for the vehicle, but I could still pull and clear engine codes .
