Can anybody tell me if it is possible to convert to a pushbutton start? I have 86 f250 6.9 idi.

 

all you need to do is put a push button in and wire it up to the starter solenoid , leave the glow plugs to work with the key !

Why would you want to hack up your wiring harness to put a push button start in?

 

Well my steering column is broken. So to start the truck I have to hold the steering wheel up and to the right.

 

That is a built in anti theft column. It is very rare. Do not tamper with it.









J/K I could see the need for a push button, but another column from the junkyard would be the way to go.

 

I would be fine with lifting it to start it, but it's hard to drive with the steering wheel flopping up and down. It's not a tilt wheel. I took the all the plastic fall see what the problem was and looks like two of the bolts hole are broke on the steering column base. I think maybe it should lock in place after you start it.

 

Ok, but a push button starter isn't going to fix the floppy column...x2 on a replacement column....

Any non auto 80-86 column from the same type truck. I am not sure if there is a difference between 4wd and 2wd. Is your truck currently shifting on the column or the floor. Most 3 speed column shifts are pretty worn out. Most people convert to the floor.

One problem with just putting a starter switch on is that the factory switch does several things. One important thing is that circuits that are sensitive to sudden voltage changes are disengaged in the "start" position--you'll notice for example the radio doesn't play. If you just have the ignition on and switch on the starter there is the possibility of damaging sensitive electronics. On something older without a computer, it would probably be ok, since that's how it was in the good old days.
