240 to a 272 swap
Hi All,
Found a 57 running 272 complete at a decent price. Haven't seen it yet, will go look this weekend.
I'm considering swaping it into my 66 f100 to replace my 240.
The seller has a 4 speed on the motor now and I have a t19 in mine.
I get great gas mileage with mine, but I'm looking at putting a midsize camper on her and pulling a small trailer with my gear for traveling.
1) Would the 272 be better than my 240 for power?
2) Will the t19 bolt up to the 272 or will I need an adapter?
3) What other possible parts will I need to change besides the motor mounts & exhaust? Radiator?
4) Is there anything I should be looking for as a "warning sign" that all is not well with this motor? I know it's still in the truck, don't know if it's in "hear it run" shape or not. (Waiting on a reply from the seller)
Any suggestions you folk have would be wonderful.
Thanks,
Judi

With all due respect to the 272, do yourself a favor and pass.
Replace or upgrade your 240 to a 300. Include a long tube header, 4bbl manifold, small 4bbl and an RV type cam. No conversion headaches.
jmo, ymmv
272 better for power:
--more than the 240, same or a little more than the stock 300 depending on how it's done up. ('57 4bbl version for example)
t19 to y bell:
--T19 uses "Ford butterfly" bell to trans pattern. Y uses old square pattern. Some tranmissions have both. You need to check. If it doesn't have it, it can be drilled to fit, iirc. Check input length and pilot.
other parts:
--mounts, exhaust, probably a larger radiator depending on what you have. Any accessories besides an alternator?
warnings:
--272s had oiling problems. How that was corrected in this engine would be a question.

Howdy,
The 300 would be a GREAT engine to replace with..... AND you could probably also find a good automatic trans to go with it if you wanted! (AOD, C-6, AODE, E4OD, OR........ ZF-S-542/547 5 speed/OD etc)
Depending on how new you wanted to go, you could even get a newer EFI 300 and the ECM for the engine would control an AODE or an E4OD! (My second choice for my F-600 WAS & IS a 300................great engine!!!!!)
I don't think the 272 (really 292) was available in 66 in the US was it?.........this doesn't matter but all you would need to get for a 4 speed trans is a T-98 + bell housing to match they're everywhere (including in my garage!!!..........and literally the same as a T-18/19) VERY good transmission and still supported.......
272/292 can be built to do just fine ............................(It's what did with my 292, rebuilt, balanced & ported)
.........AND with modern oil and normal oil changes, there are no oiling problems (unless it's already sludged up because the previous owner(s) didn't change it!!)
For your truck though to make it "easy", I would choose a 300 and ZF 5 speed out of a 80's - 90's F150.
Cheers,
Rick
