How To Get My New Trailer Home?

Make sure you get a bill of sale and associated paperwork and have it readily accessible in your truck. I've stopped numerous vehicles traveling through Virginia without license plates displayed. As long as they have a bill of sale, title, etc. and I run the VIN and nothing comes back such as stolen, etc., they're good to go. Just so long as you have your paperwork in order, I wouldn't sweat it. Personally, I'd rather do it that way than to try to use a tag off of another vehicle.
To me, if I run the tag and it doesn't match the trailer, it sends up more of a red flag than no tag at all. And just to qualify that, I probably run between 50 and 100 tags per 12 hour shift on everything from cars, trucks, and trailers to tractor-trailers and everything in between.

Never had that problem since I've had an active mass. trailer plate to swap off which is completely legal with a bill of sale. You're allowed x amount of days to register or transfer plates after purchase but I've always let my insurance agent know what's going on. Unless you're going to have it go through someone elses plate and bill of sale I'd suggest doing that as well.

i know when i bought my haulmark trailer brand new i was told that as long as i had the paperwork (bill of sale, ect) and i wasnt hauling anything in the trailer on my way home with it id be alright, i had no problems and ironically i didnt have the paperwork, they hooked me up , said my paperwork was in the trailer and i thought, "good to go" and left, turns out they ment their sales office "trailer" not what i was pulling. oopps. when i got home and went to look for it, it dawned on me, had to call and have them mail it to me. i wouldnt put a tag on it from another trailer, if it gets ran and doesnt match, there will be more troble for you than if you had no plates and a bill of sale in your hand. im sure state law will vary, but ive known of someone getting in troble for flat-towing a car on a dolly with plates off another vehicle.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I go home without an issue. I borrowed a friend of a friend of a friend's repair plate. Not sure if it was legal or not, but I made it home without a large ticket or a night in jail. The trip was great. First long trip like that I have ever really done in two days. Going down to Maryland was perfect, coming home was ok except I figured the George Washington Bridge "won't be THAT bad." I'll never make that mistake again, 3.5 hours to go uner 1.5 miles. Other than that it was flawless.
