Faulty transmission fluid dipstick?
Hello,
I bought a 1991 7.3 IDI F250 late last year and I'm still in the process of checking all the routine maintenance items. Guy I bought it from said it had a new transmission put in within the last year or two, so I figured the fluid had to be changed then, right?
Anyway, I finally got around to checking trans. fluid level the other day and I'm getting no detectable reading. There's a little residual fluid on the stick, but nothing like a clear line as on a oil check.
I bought a gallon of the Mercon ATF style stuff that Advance Auto sells, ran the truck for about 15 minutes, reversed and parked it on level ground, and checked again. Still nothing. Added about a quart. Still nothing.
The truck hasn't show any signs of transmission problems or leaks. It shifts hard (especially from 1st to 2nd), but the guy swears that's from the "heavy duty lockout torque converter" installed with the tranny.
Is it possible my stick is reading wrong or not at all? I don't want to add too much... In what kind of increments do you guys add the fluid when you're trying to zero in on the right amount?
Thanks for any advice offered.

Shifting hard could be a result of the TPS not being set properly. Thats what my issue was. Just to make sure are you Checking the level when its idling in neutral IIRC or park not sure and make sure its all warmed up. If you do over fill it you can syphin(not spelled right) ATF out. Dont taste good but the only way to do it is stick a hose down there and suck until in flows out
