I don't have the FX4 package but oredred the OEM skid plates and installed myself. The components came with no instructions, and I couldn't find any support online. The transfer case plate was self explanatory and fairly easy. The gas tank plate was more challenging. I hope my advice will help save you some time.

My '11 F-250 had an existing fuel tank gaurd (plastic) that mounted to the frame along the outer edge of the tank. The OEM skid plate comes with this same plastic gaurd mounted to the plate.

1) Remove the existing plastic gaurd from the frame (3 nuts and 4 bolts total). I re-used these fasteners. All fasteners are 13mm.

2) Skid plate package comes with 2 support brackets that fasten to the under body of your truck. Under body structure has pre-existing holes that accept the clip-nuts that Ford is so famous for (no drilling required for entire project).

The longer bracket (with 90 degree top mounting portion) mounts near the aft portion of the fuel tank. Pre existing holes in the under body indicate where to mount the bracket.

The shorter front bracket mounts to the under body where there are a couple different alignment options of holes pre existing on the under body. Align the front bracket with the skid plate mounting holes (3 total) and choose the best under body mounting location.

3) The biggest hang-up I had with this relatively easy project was that I didn't know the pre-existing plastic gaurd has to come out first. Once I figured this out, everything else made sense. I ordered the skid plates and associated hardware from my dealer for about $750. Good Luck.

There has only ever been two. My 02 with FX4 has just the two; one on the transfer case, one on the fuel tank.

$750 is a rip off! every 4x4 should get them skid plates regardless. Whats the factory option price like 100 bucks or something, stupid. But at least you have them now like it should have from the beginning

You can substitute your own nuts and bolts for the transfer case, they

Sounds like you did it right. The fuel tank is a pain. I recently replaced the foot on my pick up tube in my tank and it is certainly a wrestling act.

 

Anyone else ever add skid plates to their trucks?

 

like i said earlier EVERY 4x4 should have them stock, especially since you can order them seperate IF you order the truck for a mere 100 dollar's!!!!!

 

my dads 2000 F350 Lariat! didnt have them either. We went to a local junk yard and got his for 75 dollars two years ago
