OEM Skid Plates Installation
I don't have the FX4 package but oredred the OEM skid plates and installed myself. The components came with no instructions, and I couldn't find any support online. The transfer case plate was self explanatory and fairly easy. The gas tank plate was more challenging. I hope my advice will help save you some time.
My '11 F-250 had an existing fuel tank gaurd (plastic) that mounted to the frame along the outer edge of the tank. The OEM skid plate comes with this same plastic gaurd mounted to the plate.
1) Remove the existing plastic gaurd from the frame (3 nuts and 4 bolts total). I re-used these fasteners. All fasteners are 13mm.
2) Skid plate package comes with 2 support brackets that fasten to the under body of your truck. Under body structure has pre-existing holes that accept the clip-nuts that Ford is so famous for (no drilling required for entire project).
The longer bracket (with 90 degree top mounting portion) mounts near the aft portion of the fuel tank. Pre existing holes in the under body indicate where to mount the bracket.
The shorter front bracket mounts to the under body where there are a couple different alignment options of holes pre existing on the under body. Align the front bracket with the skid plate mounting holes (3 total) and choose the best under body mounting location.
3) The biggest hang-up I had with this relatively easy project was that I didn't know the pre-existing plastic gaurd has to come out first. Once I figured this out, everything else made sense. I ordered the skid plates and associated hardware from my dealer for about $750. Good Luck.
