Pennies in a Coffee Can

Ive got a 99 with 286k, and DI Chip. When I go to the front of my truck, with the hood up, the engine sounds like a healthy 7.3. But when I go to either side and start walking back toward the rear of the truck i can hear a ridiculously loud pinging noise like someones shaking a bunch of pennies or marbles in a coffee can. I thought it could be the chip effecting the valves but I dont hear it when Ive got my head in the engine so I took it to a budy of mines place and he said its sounding like its coming from the torque converter area. I think Ive seen a post somewhere saying this is a problem for the 99's. Anyone have a
easy fix, or a fix at all, and the best way to go about it.

Thanks

(sorry for any mispellings, Im using my phone.)

from what i've read, the sound/symptom is a broken/cracked torque convertor.

No, actually it's common in the 99's. It's not a problem other than the noise. Mine rattled for a few years without as many miles as you have. I got worried and was tired of the sound and replaced it. But others on here just let em rattle. That is of course if what you are hearing is the TC and it does sound like it to me.

I agree with Barry. I also have a late 99 that now has 330K on it and the Torque converter has rattled since it was new. If your performance is not suffering and you are still on your stock tranny at 286K then by all means do not break that thing open. When (and if) it does finally give up the ghost then you can replace the TC while the tranny is being rebuilt.

Wait till your rebuilding/replacing your trans. I changed my rattler and flexplate only to have misc junk from trans infect the new TC.
What a waist of time and money. Let it rattle, it won't hurt anything but your nerves.

If you have 285K on an 99 truck trans and tork convertor you're the only one I know about with that earily convertor. That is one thing they should of recalled but didn't put it out there. Most like me waited to long and after warranty is out, oh thats the covertor. If you complained a lot
during the warrant period they replaced it. I would change both, trans &
covertor with that mileage. My 2cents.
