272 performance rebuild help!

I have a v8 272 y block in my 56 f100 with a 2 barrel carb. I am wanting to rebuild it to get some more horses out of it..hopefully more than 200 and use it as daily/project car. any ideas on inatke manifold, carb, roller rockers, cam...etc. I really appreciate the help. I am looking for ideas such as bolt ons and internal work.

Howdy,

You're really in the wrong forum for this.....

You might be better off posting in the Y-block forum...... Y-Block V8 (239, 272, 292, 312, 317, 341, 368) - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

Now having said that, go to FORD Y

and Y-BlocksForever Forum

and you'll find all the Y-block "stuff" you'll ever want to know!

Cheers,

Rick

What will be come know as the “Wayne’s dissenting opinion” reply;

I think it would be fair to say that the Y block has certain built in performance limitations that for the most part can be overcome with time and money, to eventually arrive at a point of un-drivability and the power output of a 302 with a four barrel!

Bore it out to 292. Find a couple heads with bigger valves, the 272 trucks came with small valves but the T-birds had big valves. Rebuild engine and heads. Get a 4bbl intake and new 4bbl carb, I got my carb from Summit. Put on dual exhaust. That should get you in the ball park of 200 hp. Beyond that you can spend a lot a money. Cost $2500-3000 IMHO

would you happen to know how much it would have to be bored over to be considered a 292?

The majority of the 272’s can be bored to the standard 292 bore size (0.125” over) but there are those rare few that have core shift or block imperfections that prevents this. Sonic checking the block before boring would be the only way of knowing this for sure and preventing some possible headaches later. Even blocks with heavy core shift can occasionally be salvaged by offset boring using the sonic test data.
