Check your brake lights. Are the bulbs all good?

What Skip and I are both getting at is the Brake-Shift interlock. You have to depress the brake pedal to shift out of Park. You probably knew that, but one never knows. The circuit may also not work right if you have a brake lamp out. It also may not work if you have a bad brake switch.

When it won't shift out of Park, you can try this. Turn engine off. Depress parking brake. Turn key to the Off position (steering wheel will still turn), and then shift the transmission to the Neutral position. Then start the engine in Neutral. That should get you home so that you can figure out what is wrong.

I'm betting brake switch, since it is intermittent.

Have tried the Brake petal depressed and lights work. Ever 10th time I try it it will engage. Once stopped and back into put back into park it jams again.
Thanks

You may have loose torx screws near your steering column.

Can you tell me where these are located?
Thank You
Tom

PS I just went outside and tried it again. It has not run since yesterday. I turned the key to the first position, stepped on the brake and it worked fine 10 straight times. So now I guess the engine must be warm??????
Trust just went out the door

After reading this post, I don't think that the loose torx screws may be the problem. But you can check if you like. Below is the link to another thread in the Excursion forum that shows where it is. Good luck.

I have an 04 f250 and had the same problem for about a year. I just got used to reaching under the dash and lifting up on the brake/interlock switch to release the shifter. It would only do it periodically at first. but then it did it only when the weather was cold. then it did it constantly. I finally stopped being lazy and fixed it. I was cheap and pulled apart the component, bent the contacts a little and re-installed it. Works every time now The contacts wear and the gap becomes to great for the movement from the brake pedal to force them into contact.

It's located right where the brake pedal meets with the shaft that comes through the firewall from the brake cylinder. Right at the joint where there is a steel pin connecting the shaft and brake pedal. If you can't move the shifter from park, reach down and lift up on it. It should immediately release the shifter. There will be a painted yellow metal cotter pin covered by a yellow plastic cover to prevent it from coming loose. When you remove the steel pin the switch will fall off. It takes a bit of fiddling with to get the switch out and when you go to re-install it. But it's not hard to figure out(just the angle, and working under the dash that makes it a PITA) The componet case is just two plastic halves held together by 4 small plastic snaps around the outside of the case along the seam. I used my pocket knife to release the clips. Once open you will see two sets of contacts. One set for the brake lights, one for the shifter lock release. I just bent the long copper contacts just enough to close the gap a bit.

When you open it up and see what it contains... you wonder why they charge so much for it.

I know this is an old thread but I was having the same issue f^@# with it enough and eventually it would go into gear. I tried what swinehart suggested and it works great now. I love this forum.
