6.0 Transmission cooler install question

I'm in the middle of my 6.0 transmission cooler install and had quick question.

Does the direction of transmission fluid flow matter? In other words, does passenger side cooler connection need to go to the return line/drivers side connection go to the supply line or vise versa? I wouldn't think it would matter since it is a continuos loop, but I just wanted to check before I secure all my connections.

Right now, I have the drivers side going to the return line (line with the magnefine filter).

Thanks for the help!

It doesn't matter which one is hooked up to which inlent/outlet. Either way the fluid spends the same amount of time in the cooler and to the same effect, cools the same amount in either direction. Goodluck with the rest of the install!

Good to hear, one route was much easier than the other...

In the process of installing, I needed to add a couple of 90 degree fittings. Nowhere locally stocked 1/2" 90 degree barbed fittings in brass, so I was forced to use plastic. It's rated to 480 degrees, but I'm still a bit skeptical. I did install the plastic fittings only on the return line, after the cooler, so theoretically it wouldn't see any spikes over 480. Any thoughts?

Those barb fitting will hold the pressure just fine, and if your temps ever get even close to 480 degrees you have other major issues to worry about besides that fitting. I might be concerned about it overtime as far is it possibly getting brittle. But they should be just fine until you can find some brass ones later on down the road.

That's what I was thinking, they might get brittle over time. I'm going on a 2500 mile road trip next week so I'm trying to be as proactive as possible. Luckily they're in easy to access areas so I can swap them out once I order some brass ones online.

I was thinking of getting these to replace the plastic ones with after the road trip. Anyone have a better source?

Where's a good place to get a 6.0 transmission cooler? I called a wrecking yard that told me they had two of them and a week a later I got a call saying they didn't have one after all. So I'm back on the hunt. Autozone keeps offering me a "heavy duty" generic cooler for about $60, so if the 6.0 costs too much more, I'll just go that route.

If you are OK with it being a three piece assembly, go to a hardware store and buy two barbs and a 90 and screw them together.
I know my local Ace Hardware sells the parts.

I bought mine off ebay. The guy had it listed for $225+ $40 shipping. I sent him a message offering $200 if I did the transaction outside of ebay. He accepted the offer so I got mine for $200 shipped.

Some are lucky enough to find them on craigslist or a wrecking yard. They're few and far between there. If you want a used one quick at a discounted priced, ebay works well.

New ones can be had through partsguyed.com or Tousley Ford for around $350 IIRC.

I ended up going with the McMaster Carr version. They have very fast shipping and it's a solid one piece setup so there will be less restriction & fewer joints to worry about leaking in the long run.

I checked out my local Ace and they did have a 2 piece setup that works, but it was $45 for a few of them...

Got mine from Partsguyed, who is one of our sponsors. Think you'll be hard pressed to beat his price too.

Them are some nice fittings for $7 I am sure the shipping cost more than that. Did you get them straight from McMaster Carr ?
