40"+? Considering a "new" set

for what it's worth, I don't recall of ever hearing about a case failure with a power lok, where as i've seen plenty of track locks and open cases go boom. i don't think the tires will be an issue and as an added benefit the power lok allows for some slip in front when your at low speed and not putting the fire to the tires, so it's great for a trail/mud rig as you can steer better on slow trails with turns.
EDIT: and even if the tires do wear the clutches out, they are rebuildable so it's not like its game over or anything.....

Yeah, I just wasn't sure when you said 16.5-16.1 in the first post, is 16.5 the width? I never know how they size AG tires. But, yeah, I knew that about the 16.1's from Seth's new tires, thanks for the recap though.
Also, I realize it was already mentioned, but check the pirate classifieds often, you'll find something cheap soon enough.

The tire slippage point that you make and not locking up during acceleration is EXACTLY why I'm leaning towards a ltd slip (and thanks to you all, the powr lok..and I spell that funky like bc I believe that's how ford officially did it. If not, I guess i'm a dummy). Also didn't know a LSD was grippy enough to 'splode the case. I thought the clutches just didn't grab and then worn out due to being constantly overwhelmed.
The 16.5-16.1 ags; you're actually backwards Dan, the first # (16.5) is the width...idk what width (tread, or section width) they're measuring, also they never do seem to specify minimum or optimum rim size like truck tires. I've been researching and diff brands of "16.5" (ie firestone and...I think "American farmer" brand, or something like that) will be different heights on the same size rims. As far as how they size the height of ag tires....I'll never freaking know...and I've just realized you've corrected yourself and I've basically repeated exactly what you said with more words. But I'm too lazy to cut out what I've just typed. Anyway, might buy me a cheapo tire tuner and do a little work to these firestones, as they've never been cut on, so they could have a little more life left in them (if memory serves, I think they have about 3/8-1/2" of tread left, but that's nowhere near what they come with brand new).

Yup...then it brings the stink.
I just figured it up, so far for my truck and all the parts to put it on tons with 5.13's and the ag tires, I've got under $1,500 in it. I still need a metric ton of little bs, but I'll bet I could have it wheel-able for under $2,500...maybe even $2,000. But it's gonna be ugly as trailerpark sin...

...last resort.
I've got a 78 hp44 but it's in really good shape, I hate to do that but all my spending lately has made $90 wedges a problem. I have the $$$, but I need it for other stuff....again with the decisions. I'll prolly just break down and buy the damn JBG pieces. I can't believe they're that pricey. Does anyone have a "free shipping" code?

I just remembered (ok, last night at work) the JY I got my passenger side axleshaft for my d44 (obviously) has a complete pre77.5 axle including the radius arms and trac bar. When I got my axle shaft off of the guy, he charged me $30 and said "you know, I couldve just sold you the whole thing for $100". At the time I didn't have a way to haul it, but I might go up that way sometime this week and check it out. $100 for a complete axle beats $100 for pieces of cast.....
I'll bet he sold it yesterday morning and I'll be a (business) day too late lol.
Oh, btw...I can't find a 4.10 & down powr-lok/bare case on JBG. They have a trac lock, they also have powr-lok for 4.56 & up...WTF
