Take a flat head screw driver and there is 2 tabs(on each side).Pry them down and pull at the same time.You can use 2 screws to put the spring back on and dont have to worry about it breaking off any more

I ended up unbolting half the dash in order to get to the bolts on the ashtray housing .
but my end results where the same , I put 2 screws through the spring .
Wish i would of got your reply before i tore half my dash apart !.... lol
