Stalls ? (engines sputters/struggles then dies) or shuts down?

If your idle is 1200 (which seems kind of high; I'm at 750 on mine) there is no way the trans can cause enough loading to kill the engine unless you have serious issues with the intake/ignition systems.

If it just shuts down when you select P or R then I'd be checking the wiring pretty carefully. Did you put in a neutral safety switch? That should only affect the starter but I've seen stranger things happen on conversions.

I've never run a 302 in a Ford truck, only sixes and the FE 360 V-8, but I would be checking the timing set if you can find no vacuum leaks...1200 at idle is way high.
You need to figure out why it's not breathing...it's got fire and fuel.

engines sputters/struggles then dies my friend put the choke down about 3/4 of the way and it stayed running he said it sounds like its not getting enough fuel and the timing is off

stays running when choked...does it run smooth or rough like that? sounds like its running way lean. its not breathing right.

Timing is easy to adjust, at least. I'm not familiar enough with the Autolite carbs to offer any suggestions on a lean condition specific to the carb; I would suggest checking the fuel pump and filter to make sure you're getting a solid flow of fuel up to the carb before getting too involved in troubleshooting it. My '72 ran kind of odd one day (seemed down on power) then the next time I went to use it, it wouldn't start at all - turned out to be because the fuel pump was toast.

no vaccum leaks? do u have a stock cam, if u have a big cam u might need a bigger powervalve in the carb, my 84 chevy swb would do the same thing and i put a vaccum guage on it and as soon as it put it in gear the vaccum dropped and it woould die, powervalve fixed it, might not fix urs but its just a suggestion
