real world mpg in ecoboost 4x4
#32
My buddy, who also traded in a chevy for Supercrew 4x4 w/ 3.55's ECO and is only averaging 12-13 MPGs mostly city. He drives is pretty hard but he said that he has taken it on a 30 minute drive going 65 and he said that he was averaging about 16mpg. Granted he only has 600 miles but i have a feeling they are not going to hit the 21MPG that shows on the window sticker.
My buddy who is a ford mechanic told me that they may not be getting the mileage ford is claiming but said that is the engine of the future. I went ahead and ordered one because of the power and if i can get 18 HWY, i'm happy. My 05 Nissan frontier would only get 19 on the HWY and its' power doesn't even come close to the ECO.

After my test drive, my first question to myself was this: If I owned this truck, how could I not drive the hell out of it and have a blast every day?! This truck will run and when other vehicles are at the end of their rope, this damned thing is still pulling.
It seems to me that the ecoboost trucks can be configured to satisfy everyone's needs.
If this truck in 4x2 dress and a 3.31 axle will get 25 hwy, why would anyone want a Taurus, Edge, Flex, Escape..............?

i think alot of this has to do with driving style.. being a turbocharged gas motor, ford i am sure tunes them very conservative, stoichiometric is 14.7 and on boosted gas engines they could run as low as 10.1 or even 9.1 in cases. now closed loop on the highway with out the chargers blownin. the truck def has the capibility of 21 22 mpg, with the right gear ratio, the bsfc is def right. i mean its 3.5 l ,, i bet that will be the best thing about tunners for this thing in the long run, being able to get better mpg's , manufacters are scared of turbo cars for this reason, people putting swifty 87 octane in them,, they have to get them rich enough so they dont melt ,, cant wait ,i bet if we could over air (lean burn) on the high way we could get 25 26 out of them

I saw the window sticker on my new truck today. 2011 F150 XLT EB 4x4 SC. Transport Canada 20mpg City/30mpg Highway. Canadian Imperial gallons are larger than US gallons so do some math if you're south of the 49th parallel and comparing numbers.
My best highway run with my '99 F150 XLT SC 4.6l 4x2 empty has been 18mpg. Most of the time it's city driving or hauling 6000lbs of bikes, gear and trailer to various racetracks. I'm lucky to get 10mpg when loaded.
I think my '99 was rated to pull around 7700lbs. The '11 EB w/3.55 gears is rated at 9800lbs. HP and torque is way up with the EB. Passing on a two lane highway wasn't an option with the '99. I'll know for sure soon. I get the truck tomorrow and my first track weekend is early May.

Eco Mileage
I picked up my new EB yesterday. I really like the truck, it is a SC, 4x4, with 3.73 gears. My trip home from the dealer was 160 miles. I set the cruise on 75 and drove in. The truck was showing 17.2 mpg. I did a little in town driving, and of course played a little bit with the accelerator and it is still showing 16.8 mpg. I only have a total of 220 miles on the truck. I will keep everyone posted of what it continues to do.

Here's a video a guy put up with his 2011 fx4 ecoboost w/ 3.73 gears. He puts the cruise on at 70mph and resets the mpg guage for 7-8 miles. Pretty good video:

If you want to get a fairly accurate idea of what mpg a vehicle will attain. Fill the vehicle up with fuel (say 3 pump clicks), drive until you have less than 1/4 tank of fuel, refill the truck.(same amount of clicks same pump if possible) Divide the miles driven buy the number of gallons needed to fill the truck. If you want more accuracy do the described process 3 times and average the 3 mpg numbers together.

My dad has an 11 SuperCrew Lariat 4x4 5.5' bed with the max towing package. I'm not sure which gears he has but I will check Friday when I get home. He has been getting mid 17s doing mixed city and highway with a few stoplights with stoplights driving. His window sticker said 15 city 21 highway. I got 19.4mpg with it going 70mph for ~30 miles and 60mph for ~50 miles. He got 17.5 on the way there taking the same route, so driving style definitely has an impact.
He also has ~1400 miles on his truck. I will absolutely report back once he passes 3000 if his mileage improves. It will be about 3-4 weeks from now.
I think people are disappointed because rumors have been 17 city 25 highway, but I don't remember the rumors ever indicating the truck setup. A 3.5L motor is small for a fullsize truck, and additional weight has a huge impact on mileage. I don't think people are realizing the reported 25mpg probably wasn't on a 4x4 Supercrew, the heaviest truck you can get the motor in.

There are to many factors involved to get a true mpg, you would need reports from all across the country to average together to even come close.
State (flat, mountains)
Average temps (cold starts/long idle times)
Elevation
Traffic conditions
Driving habits
Fuel mixtures
Need I go on! Drive it yourself, drive it right and in your environment and see what you get. There is your real world MPG!
