I have a 49 Merc 1/2 ton and was wondering what kind of steering columns others have used. I am planning on using one from a donor car or truck with a column shift, and most likely out of a Chev (not by choice just easier for getting wiring harnesses). What I'm looking for is donors that guys have used before and possible lengths. I know all the after market columns work really well, but I seem to like doing everything just a little bit cheaper and a whole lot harder.
I'm using one out of a '75 Chevy Malibu in my 49 F-1. It seems to be the right length...
I looked for pics of your install. Did you have to run a shaft from your column to the steering box? did you change the angle of the column (hole threw firewall)?
Sorry, I have no pictures of the column yet. The column went through in the same place as the original, possibly a bit lower to improve the angle to the Chrysler steering box (83 Chrysler 5th Ave). I used two Borgeson U-joints.
