Updating 2005 Factory Stereo to newer Factory Stereo with MP3

I have a 2005 F350 SuperDuty Crew with the factory 6CD Stereo my truck is equipped with the steering wheel controls as well.

I would like to change the unit out to a Factory 6CD MP3 unit out of a 2007 Ford Fusion. The units look physically the same, the harness plug ins look the same, the only difference appears to be the antenna plug in.

Are there any other models that had units like this that someone could recommend?

Has anyone had any experience in this? I want to continue to be able to use the steering wheel control, and maintain the factory look of my truck.

Any advice/feedback would be great.

Thanks!

Are you just changing to gain the ability to play MP3s?

Yes sir. My company truck (2010 Expedition) has a single CD with MP3 and it is a really nice option I wish my personal truck had.

Okay....just thought I'd ask because there is a good alternative to replacing the OEM radio. You can get a P.I.E. adapter that'll enable you to use ipods, etc. with the factory unit. You can find the adapters here:

PIE :: Precision Interface Electronics

And here is an excellent installation write-up:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...2006-f250.html

The dash removal is simple and this mod is an excellent alternative to replacing the entire head unit.....unless you have already bought the other one. And, if I recall correctly, this won't affect your steering wheels controls and their proper function.

Just some food for thought.

Thanks John, I have that adapter presently, but I have been downloading/recording media from internet radio and recording it on a CD/RW to listen to in my company truck. It is a huge convenience being able to use the factory controls to listen to it and not have to fumble around with a ipod.

Has anyone updated their radio in the fashion I have inquired about?

Steve

I also have a 2005 F350 and I replaced my head unit with a unit from a 2009 Fusion, just took a little fabrication with the brackets as the bracket mounting holes are not in the same place on the radio. I also have the PIE adapter for an XM tuner. The antenna plug is different but I was able to get an adapter from Crutchfield. The steering wheel controls work fine. The radio sounds like it has more power than the stock unit. That was a plus. The only thing the Fusion radio didn't have was a clock as the Fusion has a separate clock in the dash. I stuck a cheap digital clock on the upper right corner of the dash bezel. it looks ok and I can actually see it better.

Thanks. I also have a line on a unit from a 2007 Explorer. Based on what you've said it should also work just fine. I really like to have the clock there as well, so I will keep that in mind when I choose the unit.

Why not just go aftermarket? You can get everything in one unit nowadays resonably priced. Nav/Xm-Sirius/MP3/Rear camera/Bluetooth.

True that is a alternative, but I like the look of the stock unit and it really lessens the chances of break-ins when all they see is a factory stereo.
