I started the process at the beginning of the year, the temporary sticker runs out on March 30th...I am hoping for the best. I think that it's worth the effort though, something cool about an old truck with old plates.

51PANELMAN: licenseplate.tv is only my front one........the rear is a eBay snag for $40. The front plate was repainted with lemon yellow and carefully molded to the shape of the front bumper after many times snagging my shin on it. ;]

CharlieLed: DMV took way too long, but it sure looks cool.

How did you get the repro plate past DMV? Did the clerk inspect it and then give them back to you or did he/she (no, not Julie - tee, hee) send them to Sacramento? Did you paint the back of the repro plate black or leave it white?

I have several single original COM plates and have not tried to get a repro plate to match in order to do the actual YOM because I didn't think that the repro would get past the DMV clerks. If you look really close, you'll see that the repro plate is not exactly like the original plate. The repro plate doesn't have a slight beveled edge like the original and the 19 CALIFORNIA 51 font is larger and wider than the original plate.

You can see the difference in this picture. Look at the perimeter edge of the plate and the 19 CALIFORNIA 51 font. You can also see that the COM is stamped crooked on the repro plate. I also discussed that with them and received a new replacement set of plates, but the COM was stamped only slightly better, and still somewhat crooked, on the replacement set.

When I got my repro plates, I compared them to the originals and found the differences. I spoke with the repro place at length about the differences and at this time they won't make the change because it requires re-tooling. The font size on the 51 repro plates is the same as it was on 40s plates, so to minimize production costs, they're sticking with one font size.

My "YOM" plates are repros of my personalized plates in the current style.

Looks like I need to dump the pairs of other original YOM plates that I've been collecting. If this repro YOM plate thing takes off and the DMV approves them, the originals won't be worth much.

I've got to restore this (deep red background, white letters), I'm thinking of having it powder-coated red with paint for the letters. What's interesting to me is that the "31" is a county code, and the 1142 is the truck number within that county. So in '52, there were less than 10,000 trucks in that county (I'd bet WAY less).

51PanelMan: I did paint the back black and drilled the holes approximately in the right place, painted the text lemon yellow, and crossed my fingers when I went to the DMV. I have heard that some DMV offices use a magnet. I did tell the clerk I had just painted the plate and the paint was wet (true) and she gave it back to me. She used the rear plate for the copy because it had the 54 tag on it. It cost an extra $10 a year for YOM plus the initial $35 so the golden state should be happy. If you think lightning will strike twice go ahead!

I may do that sometime in the future. She must have been really clueless not to notice the difference in the writing on the bottom between the two plates.

Congratulations! You got one over on the state. You should be proud.

Yes she only charged me $11 and told my I did not have to surrender my old plates....then called my back (B4 I left the building) to surrender the plates and I got a letter from Sacramento asking for another $34.......but I must say every time I have been to the DMV they have been very courteous but not too efficient. Like I said the paint was wet!!

I would like to use these plates on my truck when it is ready but I seriously doubt that our govenment owned insurance company up here in B.C.will allow that. The plates are the originals for a half ton truck in this province.

Nice going Calorchard! I've got YOM california plates too. And you did really well to get it all done so easily and quickly. And i guess for sure it all depends of the DMV worker one gets at the counter. They make it easy or they make it hard. I had to drive up to the next town and go to their DMV after my local Napa County DMV couldn't handle it. They even thought my very nice OEM 58 plates were somehow "forgeries" or bad copies or whatever, because they had a paper that said they were suppose to be a different width etc. I don't know what they were thinking, but I got them back-they copied them and "were hinting" that they wanted to keep them etc/and wanted to know where I go them etc. I thought they were gonna call the cops haha!! And the next DMV thought all was fine. Although it did take some work on their part/lots of necessary paper work and measuring and doing computer work on their end. It must have taken them an hour to get all done, but i left with a temp paper to put in my window and the current stickers arrived in the mail a couple weeks later.

Man, I didn't even notice the snow. I have a 53 GA plate that they'll let me use on my truck. I just have to keep the modern plate and documentation in the vehicle in case I get pulled over. Now all I have to do is get the truck up and running!
