Wow! That's going to be a difficult plate to restore. Jeez better hope the DMV worker is legally blind. Since you need two "serviceable" plates what's the shape of the other one? Maybe you can slide a couple of really good "distressed" repro plates by them. I'm going to buy a couple of repro plates as some of the guys suggested here and put my real plates away. Too bad these are really nice shape considering they were stamped while Jerry Brown's Father was governor. Feels like buying real jewelry copying it and wearing the fake one. Hopefully my tags will be here in another 3-4 weeks. Fingers crossed.

You are right tho this is a little rough but all it needs is paint.
below is a couple I ''restored" for a friend of mine.The numbers in the 1rst plate were flat,that would be the plate with no tags in the 2nd pic.I think that was 20 dollars he spent well.
