Replacing 7.3 for 7.3 help
My 02 4WD crewcab with 184K mi on it threw a rod and cracked the block this weekend. The shop wants $12K I don't have to get her running again. I found a used 7.3 with 60K on it a guy is selling everything under the hood for $3K. I am looking for advise, tips, procedures, and possibly someone to talk me out of attempting the changeout.
I am a little frustrated at the moment and am currently working on my 2nd 5th of JD for the night so I apologize if I'm not making any sense. I have the Haynes manual for the truck and the engine , but the books can only do so much. If anyone has done this type of job b4 and could give me some info I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

It's really not that big of a deal to swap the engine yourself. If you can save 9 grand, that's all the more reason. Have you ever pulled a motor before? There are plenty of pictures here of it being done. You'll just need to invest in a good engine hoist before you start since the motor is heavy.
Another option is to find a cheap junk yard engine and just order a rebuild kit for it for around $1,000 and rebuild that engine before you drop it in.
Any idea what caused the damage? Got a chip or tuner? Got any pictures? Got two aspirin for in the morning?

Yea, he's not up yet this AM. LOL!
I pulled my engine in about 4hrs last time... did not remove hood or AC condensor.
I think Clay can get ya a longblock from FORD for about $4500. I'd be very tempted to do that if ya cant tackle a rebuild. $3k not a bad deal for a COMPLETE 60k mile engine though!!!
