351 double roller timing chain! How to check for play?

Here is my double roller timing chain! Just got it off of someone that had it in their 351W on their 70's mustang.

So how do I check for play on this puppy? I want to know if it's a decent deal that I got, or a piece of junk.

To me, it looks like it's in perfect shape.

Is it just a take-off, put on procedure? Or is there more to putting on a timing chain than just slappin it on?

I'll try putting it on when I get a chance, but where do i go from there?

First thing I would do is make sure it will fit... they are not all the same. some cam gears are made for an eccentric for a fuel pump and other are not... efi has no eccentric... mix them up and it rubs on the timing cover... that crank gear has three keys make sure you use the key that lines things up (straight up) so look at the key-ways that are cut into the crank gear and use the one that is centered on the tooth... one key will be to the left of the tooth one will be to the right of the tooth and one will be centered.. use the one that is centered.. or get the directions that came with the gear set...

I see what you mean with the keys and how it fits into the cam. If it ends up fitting, i'll use it, but what am I supposed to do about the timing cover rubbing on the gears, and how would you tell? Start it up for 30 seconds and let it turn over a bunch, then take the timing cover back off?

Is there anything I can do to fix that (if it does happen), or does it become something useless that I bought for my truck?

after you bolt on the eccentric and you go to put the cover on put a little play doe on the cover and bolt it up... then check the doe... sometimes it will hold the cover off the block...

doe? i'm guessing that's an acronym for.... don't over extend? Lol, I've got no idea what doe means, but for the most part, I understand.

After rereading the post, I conclude doe means dough, as in "play-dough".

AHHH I see what you mean. Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely give that a try.
