Out with the old....
The old bias ply tires are finally out the door. And since my Cragar SS mags were suffering from peeling chrome I decided to mount my radials on my old slotted mags.
There was still a little life left in the old bias plys so I put them on an accelerated wear program....lol
Here's the results;
Heres the look;
And finally here is a clip of the accelerated wear program in action;

Bobby, How old are your Crager? That sucks that the chrome is pealing... Where are they flaking from? I'm having a hard time on what ones I should look for, for my '49... I'm thinking about the Crager SS, Slotted Mags, or Smoothie with baby moons... Which ones of yours did you like more on your truck? Let me know if you want to get rid of the Cragers...
Nice job on getting rid of the old!

Moe,
I bought them from a guy down in the Houston area so the salt pitting is what started the whole issue. I'll take some pics of the flaking chrome this evening to show you.
Kalve,
Paint it? lol....who knows, I have tons of work to do before considering that, probably a medium to dark blue of some sort.
Yea, it was a fun afternoon. I hope me neighbor didn't have his window open....lol. Now that I finally have some decent tires on there I'm going to have to be careful about lighting them up. I got to say, it sure makes a huge difference in how the truck drives to hae some radials on it. The old thing no longer tries to follow every little rut in the road

Thanks guys
As an added bonus I have a thick layer of undervoating in the right rear fender. I HAVE got to get my trac-lok installed. Maybe in the next week or two. Hopefully I'll get my insurance certificate in the mail this week so I can get the old thing registered and legal again....its time to start driving it.

Moe,
I didn't get a chance to take any pics of the old Cragars last night...life happened. I'll try again this afternoon.
The slotted mags are 15x7 and the tires are P235/75/R15's. They are an all terrain type tread, a little more aggressive looking than I wanted but the price was right ( I paid $200 for the tires).

Bob,
Ah you saw those huh. Fascinating little bit of history there. I searched for years and years but I finally found a set in an old garage out in SW Texas a few years ago.
Back in the late 40's, early 50's they were marketed as "high speed stabilizers" and were popular with early salt lake racers. I've also seen them on several early Pike's Peak Hill Climb cars. They were claimed to provide a little extra downforce at speed but I can't tell the difference. I just like they way the look.
