straight pipes are loud. but if you but straight pipes with flow masters out the sides you might like it.

Glasspacks. Straight pipes are fun for a day or two but get old real fast. My '78 has a single glasspack dumped infront of the axle sounds good IMO.

just run glass packs straight off the header and nothing else. Thats what my buddys got and its the meanest sounding truck out there, but hes also got a fully built 460. Im running the flowmaster super 40s and they sound great though, loud but not annoyingly loud

i was running just cats on my 98 chevy while i was putting the exhaust back together. dumped under the bed. it was fun for a week or so, then it started giving me headaches after about 10min driving. my opinion, is to run it straight for a little bit just to say you did, then stick a muffler on it after a month or so just to get it out of your system. it sure is fun going through town and stomping on it and having a bunch of car alarms go off as you pass. straight pipe it, but make sure you leave accomodations to put a muffler in when you get sick of it.

that is most likely the best advice you have gotten, straight it but leave the option of putting muffler, glass packs, etc. on it afterwards. just to see what you think. it is ultimately your decision on what you like, what your areas laws are on noise ordinances, what your gal will think of it etc. so like highboy75 says try it, if you like it run it if you dont, then mod it. whatever you like best.

According to his craigslist ad, it's Salvisa. I live in Cynthiana. So there's 3 from the same short radius. As for my choice, the truck I am still eyeing has a 460 that might be replaced by a 429 and then have true duals out to the bumper with some dynomax super turbos. Always been good mufflers for me. And there's a muffler test chart somewhere on the net that shows they have a nice db rating with the best or second best flow of all mufflers tested. Will try to get a link.

Burnt exhaust valves is an "old mechanics tale"

You do not "burn" them from no back pressure...but if you run a short enough exhaust, you can warp them. We're talking about straight manifolds, or no manifolds at all.
