Real world gas mileage with the 6.2

My Experinece
You get what you pay for when buying Flying J gas. They always buy the cheapest gas at the loading rack. They and Pilot Travel Center (same company now) Sometimes they get the good stuff on sale, most times they don't. If that gas had come out of the Conoco rack in Westlake La, your mileage would likely have gone up, but with that store's location, there's a half dozen loading racks it could have come from.
Up until 3 months ago I drove a 2012 F250 CC 4x4 with a 7ft box. When it left it had 155 000 km on it.
I now drive a 2011 F350 CC 4x4 8ft box. It has 92,00 km on it.
Both with the 6.2.
Pulling my boat with the F250 2012 I consistently got 21 liter/100 km (about 11.5 mpg)
Pulling my boat with the 2011 f350 I am getting 27 litres/100 km (about 8.5 mpg)
Is the longer box enough to drop the mileage by 3 mpg? Seems a lot for 1 foot of box.
Stew
Also the 2012 F350 does not seem to have the power of the 2012 F250.

I noticed a big difference in fuel. The Flying J and Pilot info is really good and I can attest to the crappy gas. I filled up at a Flying J in Montana and after about 10 miles of driving the difference in performance was very noticeable. My next stop I dumped in some fuel conditioner and filled up with mid-grade fuel and it helped a lot. I also noticed that many stations in the midwest had different octane ratings. The low grade was 85 octane and mid-grade was 88 octane. At that station I bought high test, wasn't even going to try the 85 or 88.

I've always had the best luck with Shell gas myself. Esso I've gotten terrible mileage with along with bad performance. Petro-can up here is hit or miss. Flying J same thing as Petro-can. I usually just do regular 87 octane and every 5-6 tanks i'll fill up with premium 91 octane. Mileage is staying the same at around 13-14mpg no towing (yet) though.

I have a 2015 F250 CC SB 4x4 3.73 with just under 1500 miles. Hitting 12.8 in the city and 13.7 highway, about 70 with cruise control, no trailer or load testing yet.
Regarding the "Why do you need a super duty if you are towing less than 6500?" question.
I always wondered why someone would buy a light duty F150 and tow near it's max. I guess some people like the stress?

I priced out an older tandem or tridrive semi to tow a fifth wheel but my boss (wife) said no because she can't drive it too. Kinda the point though lol. In my experience you can't compensate for weight. I always want the tow vehicle to be heavier than the trailer. A fifth wheel makes that possible. Tow behind does not. Mileage really isn't a concern for me as I don't have any fuel costs. That being said I don't want 1mpg so I fill up every 25 miles either . Compared to older gas engines the 6.2 is worlds above what they used to be.

The 5.0 F150 gets 21 mpg hywy (empty) and my 6.2 gets 17.4 hywy empty.
I'll sacrifice the 3.6 mpg for peace of mind while towing.
My trailers weigh between 7000-8000 lbs.
A newer F-150 is rated to tow it, but every time I pull one of those trailers with my F-250 I know I made the right decision.

I tow a travel trailer that weighs maybe 5500 lbs. I used to tow it with a 05 Chevy CC 5.3L w/3.73 rear gears. The Chevy did the job, but the F250 is sooo... much better. A much more relaxing pull and actually better fuel economy while towing. One of these days I want to pull it up the west bound steep incline just east of Kerrville TX on I10 just because. I am not sure what the west bound grade is but, the east bound down grade is 7%. At no point from Austin to west of Fort Stockton while running 62 to 65mph did I have to drop any lower than 4th gear to maintain that speed. I love the way the F250 does the job. I just wish the seats were as comfortable as the 05 Silverado 1500CC, but that is really my only beef with the truck.
PS: The reason for lower octane is higher altitude.

We just came back from a camping trip, it was only a 210 mile round trip, albeit at a elevation of 3000 to 4000 ft.
My truck is a lariat 4x4 2013, with a 4:30 rear end, we have a fairly heavy fifth wheel 13000lbs unloaded. I did manage to weigh the truck and trailer and the combined weight was 22,026lbs.
The average for the trip was 31litres per 100 kilometres or 7.3 miles per gallon according to the trip computer.
I was surprised how well the truck handle it, only on a couple of occasions did I have to use third gear, but that was climbing a decent grade at 65mph, the rest of the time I just locked out sixth gear.
So all in all I'm pretty happy with the truck, but may well move to a diesel dually because of the heavy pin weight and extra capacity.

2011 F250 6.2 SCREW 4 wheel Drive 3:73, 500 lbs in the cab, 700 lbs in the bed and towing 11,000 lb tag along camper. 7.7 average regular unleaded and double checked the computer hoping it was wrong! The truck did great!
Just completed a 7000 mile trip from central VA out I-40 to Durango, Co then accross to the Grand Canyon up to Yellow Stone and back across South Dakota back to VA.

Had the 'bus' for about 5 months now and put 8k on the clock.
Avg around town and on my daily is 14'ish and on Hwy trips I can see 16.5mpg as long as I keep it under 70. Towing my open car trailer (about 6,500lbs trailer weight, 3 ppl, and tools, etc in the bed) I'm seeing around 11mpg, though that was going through PA, so it wasn't flat. I'm towing from South Jersey to Myrtle Beach SC this weekend and back the following, so I should get a better idea of what it'll do on a long, flat tow.
**A post I made in another thread, but it fits here too**

6.2 Gas Mileage Questions
Just bought an 12' 6.2 cc SWB 4WD, with 11k on it. In town (florida no hills) it's getting 8.7-9.4 by
the lie o meter. Been reading posts and think it should do at least 1mpg better?
Not a lead foot. I have some questions: 1. How can you verify if your Trans is
covered by a TSB or not? 2. Does dis connecting the battery "re flash" the trans?
3. What have ya'll done that has actually improved the MPG?
(K&N is out as the last three I've installed in others, did nothing but clog the MAS.)
I know the 8k brick won't get car mileage, but the 08 Duramax/Allison I traded,
got 10.5 (hand calc) and I sure thought the Ford would do as well or better
Thanks for any input.
