the numbers on the bottom of the block are ...

It's somewhere between 1972 and whenever they next changed the block casting numbers.

Is this the # on the flat pad along side the oil pan rail where the starter mounts?

yes it run next to the oil pan on the bottom, theres another number near the water pump but i was told not to use that one?

January 28th, 1972 Unless you think it came from 1982. And that can be figured out by looking at the flat surface on the top backside of the block where the VIN is partially stamped.

well the truck it was in was a 72 so im guessing its the org block.

Probably so. If the truck is still there, you can look at the vin, and then find the same number on the block on the back.
