2001 F250 Steering Wandering
I had an issue with the steering box. The output shaft snapped off while driving down the street resulting in a minor accident hitting a parked car. Anyhow, another box was installed and the body work was completed. One thing that was noticed is that the wheels turned more to the right than the left. I was told that the steering box was not centered when installed. I took it to my mechanic and explained what I was told about the box being not centered. He determined that the steering rods were hitting off the trac bar when turning left which limited the turning radius. A 36 spline box was used with the original pitman arm. After calling ford and ordering another pitman arm, he noticed that the original arm was different than the new one. The old one was 1" shorter and had a bend in it. The new one was completely flat. To back the story up a bit, when the truck was bought new, it always had a wander in the steering. After the new arm was installed, the wander was gone and I have the same turning radius to the left and right. So basically, Ford slapped the truck together new with issues that were bound to fail sooner or later. Luckily nobody was injured or killed because of Fords screw up...
