8' Camper in a 6' bed?
I bought an 8' slide in camper before I got my truck, and ended up with a short stepside bed on my new truck. I believe the camper will fit in my truck width wise, as they are both about 48 inches wide. Would the extra 2' hanging out the back be any problem, other than maybe looking a little funny. I have seen plenty of newer trucks with 11' slide ins, that hang off the back. Weight shouldn't be a problem, according to the tag on the camper, it weighs just short of 400 pounds.

I agree that 400 lbs seems light. What you are missing on the 11' is that the axle is in a different place to your situation.
If you have a short bed, you have basically 3' infront of the axle and 3' behind it. Imagine a teeter-totter. You've got weight trying to fall off of the pivot.
With long beds, you have more bed up front. More weight in the center of the vehicle, rather than the tail end.
I would recommend making some brackets to support the overhang, but other than that, you should be okay. The slide in's that are long are made and reinforced to hang off, my guess is yours isnt.
