Yes, a oil cooler is really needed if you tow or have that 460 in something heavy. It sounds like your truck has Fords standard 460 cooler for the max tow option, or it is in a large truck.

I have had zero problems with my stock 460 oil coolers (three 460's and coonting), but some on this board report water in the oil.

Sounds like someone did a sloppy repair and does not have the cooler indexed properly, if such a thing is possible. Or possible someone has a aftermarket temp sender installed? (I thought the temp sender was on the intake manifold though?)

If you go the standard air cooler style, then be prepared to run a thermostatic bypass, otherwise you will overcool the oil, unless you are in a hot climate. The factory cooler keeps the oil from doing this, after all it will warm the oil if the oil happens to be cooler than the coolant.

Good luck, David
