Hey Gang,
What is the max input shaft torque this trans can handle? I was thinking of using one behind a somewhat hopped up
351W. Heads have been ported, Edelbrock Performer intake, 280/290 cam, 750 AFB, shorty headers. Fairly strong
engine. Thanks for the input.

Ford doesn't offer that tranny behind the 351. It has some durability issues when used behind the 300 and the 302, so I'm guessing it won't live long behind a warm 351. If you want to put an aftermarket tranny behind it, you may want to look at a Tremec 3550 or TKO, but you may need to take a look at your rear end ratio to make it work the way you want. To compare the two trannies, take a look at http://www.fordsix.com/tech/trucktranny/trucktranny.htm

I would be hesitant to put a 3550 or TKO in a truck. They can handle the input torque without a problem, but my concern would be if they could handle the weight of a truck. They would probably do fine for pulling around an empty truck, but once any weight gets in it or hitched to the truck, I don't know if they could handle that. I think both the 3550 and the TKO are rated around 6000 GCWR, which is just more than the weight of a regular F150. Hope this helps out.

I've never seen a published gross weight rating for a Tremec 3550/TKO, have you got a source for that number? As for weight it depends on the truck. My 96 regular cab, short box, 2WD 300 weighs in just under 4000#. A stretch cab, long box 4WD 351 is going to chip real hard on that 6000# number. With that cam, I'm assuming he's way more interested in hauling a** than in hauling loads and for that application, the Tremec works just fine

Both the regular 3550 and TKO I found here: http://www.tremectransmissions.com/E...s/TR-3550.asp. I agree, if it's mostly for performance, and he's not gonna do any hauling of anything besides an empty truck, these would probably work ok.

for the input guys, I really appreciate the info. I have the engine I described in a 83 Mustang 'vert, and was maybe thinking about building a similiar engine for a 90-91 short box/short cab F150. I currently have a 91 F150XLT with a 300/six , M5OD, and wouldnt modify it at all. Its just too
solid. Maybe find another as a project truck.......hmmmmmm
