Building a 460 for a pulling truck

A guy who we pull with actually got a hold a set of the EX's. I talked to the manufacturer of the heads and the flow numbers are no secret. He told me they flow pretty much the same as the aluminum EX's. The flow numbers are on the website. Another question for you. Where you pulling and what class. Around my neck of the woods the aluminum heads are not allowed.

79 Pulling Ford were do you pull? I am running in a class were I have to run a cast intake and iron heads. The classes above me have to run iron heads also. I'm running a CJ intake and DOve heads that have had alot of work done on them. This set up seems to do pretty good. I would love to stick a Victor on it and see how it ran.

I pull in Indiana, Michigan ,and Ohio. The victor intake is killer. I know guys who have run the Stealth also and when they change to a Victor it is like night and day differance. I can not believe that they limit you to a cast intake. That puts the hurtin on the old horsepower, but it also would be kind of fun to see what you could do with it. I always love a challenge.

Building a 460 for a pulling truck

I posted this as a new thread in the forum, but I found a 1969 429 out of LTD. The engine has a two-barrel and Dove A heads. Is there anything useful off of this engine (block, heads)? It's a California car complete. It ran when they parked it. I can get the entire car for $275.
So far, I'm learning everything I know about 460's and 429's from this forum, what is the difference between a Dove-A head and a Dove-AA head? Which is better?

I second that. You better jump on it. A running 460 in my neck of the woods goes for $300-$400 dollars.

Jamey, this is Chris Bouc from over in Weston, I know this is a lil off the subject but it's kinda the same. i know you run regular modified w/ ur pickup sumtimes, can you gimma a quick run down of the rules? Me and a couple of friends are building a modified this winter and I already have my 460 ready to be built, i just wondered what limitations there were in the modified for the the engine if any other then forced induction. Also hitch where abouts, thanks

I'm assuming you are talking about rules for the Street Mod classes at local pulls and not the rules for the NE Power Pullers.

Basically, the only thing I ran into this year was that places were not allowing nitrous, which most likely would not affect you or most people for that matter. Hitch height usually ranges from 26-30 in. I have not run into any local pulls that use a % of wheelbase on hitches. Tires must be DOT. Besides that pretty much anything goes with engine size and mods.

Hope that helps you out.

No, but it does have my intake, heads, rocker arms, pushrods and headers on it. Basically, now he needs to build a bottom end and put a different/better clutch in it.

What year of truck are you guys looking at building?? If it doesn't already have the 460 in it, you may have a little bit of work ahead of you, but it is a winter project so I'm sure you will be fine.

late 70's, it'll be a 351M/400 swap, no biggie other then motor mounts and some other samll issues. On that freak truck is he still running his TTB? I tryed pulling mine in stock and I cannnot for the life of me hook up to the track with it, I'd prolly be better off in modified so i could block and bind it up and get some weight on the front

I can help you out with motor mounts. They are solid and will bolt right in to a late 70's F-250.

I thought I'd just take the ones from the 460 and the ones from the 351M/400 and kinda set em on top of each other take a look at it and make something that'll bolt the 460 in, solid of course. I have my 460 outta a 79 econoline, it runs and I've never even looked at the engine, just offered him 200 for the whole thing and he said sold

I sure hope you are gonna build it some. I ran a fairly stock 460 last year and it was horrible. Put some money into it and you will be fine. Good luck.
