302 swap into a jeep...

I know this a ford truck enthusiasts site, but I couldn't find any other site that would have as much info.

I am an owner of a 1982 jeep j10 in needing of an engine. I was offered a 1983 ford bronco with a 302 c6 and np 208. The bronco is ruff and would require alot of work to safely drive on the street, trust me I test drove it on the road for less then 2 miles and I have never felt that unsafe before at 50mph. But the engine was strong and trans shifted smooth.

Anyways the bronco is cheap enough to consider dropping the entire drive train into my jeep. And I am asking what mods could I do with the 302 to help with performance. I was thinking a Edelbrock intake and carb, lunati truck cam, stock exhaust manifolds going into a single 3 inch exhaust.

Any other mods anybody can think of, also for my truck the rears will have 3.73 gears and 31 inch tires if that helps.

These dudes have a great mph/rpm calculator that I use all the time, and trans info etc. so they may be a source for swap info:

The Novak Catalog Gateway

What you listed for the 302 ought to make a good runner out of it. Beyond that, more compression, headers--then heads, a stroker--you can go nuts.

A C6 might be a bit big but if it will work, they are pretty bullet proof and inexpensive to boot.

3.73s and 31s gives you 2426 rpm at 60 mph, so if you are on the highway a bunch, be advised.

Where I live in NC is mostly highway driving so would cruising 2400 are 2500 rpm be a good range for the motor.

considering the 302 builds power/torque higher in the rpm range that cruising rpm would probably put you right in its sweet spot. just do your best to match parts that will compliment each other. if you run to large of a carb and have an intake/cam combo meant for low rpm power it just wont run well. remember that J10 is a heavy truck.

The 302 responds well to common performance parts, the stock cams are all too small and conservative so you'll see healthy gains from that alone. I'd suggest you select a carb/intake combo of no more that 550cfm and if at all possible lose the stock manifolds in favor of shorty hearers at the very least though longtubes would be better. Target gearing that produces at least 2100-2200rpm at typical highway speeds, the 5.0 is a gutless wonder below that no matter how it's setup.

Well I guess my 600 cfm carb that I have will to much for the motor, and I was only thinking about stock manifolds to get as much down low torque cruve I can get out of it.

And I was thinking to just get the motor in and drivable and find a 351w to build up then swap the 2 around. I do know the 351 will bolt in where the 302 lived but I will have to make sure I have all the front drive components.

Stock manifolds won't help with low end TQ but longtubes will. A 600cfm carb will be fine once it's jetted properly. The 351 will bolt in but it's taller and wider which will make exhaust fitting more difficult. I don't know how much room you have to work with but if space is at a premium consider stroking the 5.0 to a 347 and you'll have the same power as a 351 in a smaller package.

Nothing going on just yet... but I was looking at the bronco yesterday and it appers it might have 351 instead of the 302. The water pump boses on the block are probaly 1.5 to 2 inchs away from the head gasket. So this might get more interesting if I am right. A 351 would be a lot better motor for my heavy truck.

Yeah that sounds like a 351w, another way to ID one is the location of the distributor opening in the block, roughly level with the intake gasket is a 302, about an inch below the gasket is a 351. And the width of the intake is another tell, around 9" for a 302 and 11" for the 351.
