Thanks Redford and others. Its a 2003 (May) F350 Crew Cab 6.0. Here's the placard. I guess the only risk with this method is that the axel could have been changed before I got the truck. Unlikely, but possible.

Just scrolled farther down on drivetrain.com (thx sammie) and see the D1. "Limited Slip Differential 3.73". Assuming that it hasn't been changed since new, should I use the 75W140 Synthetic Oil in it? Ford talked me into 2 containers of the Limited Slip stink juice too.

Yes 75W140 with limited slip additive, spec is 2 oz of the additive, but check that to be sure.

Or use Royal Purple which has additive already included. I have the V423B in my truck very similar to yours and I use Royal Purple 75W140 holds about 2 1/2 quarts and I do not have any additional LS additive in it.

To answer the question on what the LS is good for.
Lest say you get on some slick stuff on one side if you have a LS
then the other side would get some traction if you did not then you would
just sit there and spin one wheel.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). 8800lbs is the maximum Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW ) specified by Ford for your truck plus its load.

OK, let me try again. GVWR 8800lb = Ford saying that your truck and its load can not safely weigh more than 8800 lbs.

What are the advantages/disadvantages?
Back in my country boy days, I saw many many trucks stuck with only one (2wd) or two (4wd) wheels turning. My Bronco had a trac-lok rear end and LS in the front. I could throw 4 rooster tails as I drove by every time.

I will always have LS or a locking differential to increase the chances of not being stuck (btw it WAS possible to get stuck in that Bronco, just farther into things - just sayin ).
