I donīt have any gearhead friends either. The closest thing would be my sister's boyfriend who's into old VW's but not a greasemonkey at all, and a frined I've had for a litle over 10 years now and works at a bike shop. My uncle used to have a car shop but got rid of it about 6 years ago and now he's too busy coordinating sports events for the city administration of a place nearby.

I do get comments about scrapping Julie from several people, but I just tell them I willl as soon as they start wearing miniskirts and fishnets on a corner at night (catch my drift there?).

I started the project ('09) while my grandpa still lived, he passed on Dec 24th, 2010 and didn't actually get to see much progress. More of a reason to finish it, and I probably won't be getting rid of it, it was the last thing we started together.

It's kinda like religion, everyone thinks you need converting to their beliefs and tell you so if you want to hear it or not. I just keep to myself, that way I don't have to say no to someone wanting to borrow my tools... or money.

one of my friends has a nice boat. he trailers it 30 miles to a lake. had it out 4 times last year and in the shop twice, then back into paid storage. then there is depreciation. i have another friend who loves to play golf, member of a country club. he says he feels like he has to play to get his money's worth. he said he pays about $100/week whether he plays or not. as said here, we can see where our money is going. we are likely to get some of it back and we can drive them around. i'll stick with my truck. dick r

Funny I was just thinking about posting this same issue over the weekend. I have a friend who's always on my case about working on my truck. He's always telling me to quit wasting my time with that pice of junk and to do something else with my time. There have been a few others but this particular friend loves to get under my skin. I really can't wait to get my truck rolling and looking good because there is a growing list of people who will never sit in it while I'm alive anyway. Unfortunatly I have no friends who even know how to change their own oil. Most of my other friends however think it's great and are supportive. Well at least to my face that is..I'm sure some think I must be crazy but keep it to themselves.

Note: We all are a bit crazy spending all our time and money on our trucks....But it is an addiction that I can live with.

Among the addictions out there, definitely one of the better ones to have. At least over booze, gambling and some other stuff (chicks, I can't say).

Yup, your right about the above, mostly, but them 'chicks' pretty soon start thinking your spending a lot more time with the truck than you are with them.

But more times then not these "friends" try and convince me to junk my truck and do something better with my time, I just tell them they need to tell there wives to let them have a hobby, or buy two brass ***** and put them in there pants so they know what it feels like to be a man..hahahahahahahah Anyway I said all of this to ask, do any of you out there have this type of "friends"? If so heres your chance to vent a bit...all in fun that is.
You should read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Prisig talks about people that disconnect from the technology that is around them. He describes his friends that want to ignore their motorcycles versus getting to know them. He also contemplates Plato and Kant in detail, but the first section has a nice rumination on the relationship between the fixer and the fixed.

Most of my friends are gearheads in one way or another. One likes working on old chevies, another on old ford cars, and another just likes wrenching, whether it be on bronco's or escorts.

But the only one's getting on me about having too much old stuff is my family.
