Mud Tires/ whats worked for you guys?

hey fellers,
its tax return time and im guessing ill have about a grand to throw into the '78, most of which ill probably put in tires...

so firstly, my truck has 1.5-2" lift springs up front that absolutely dwarf the 275/75/15's will i be safe with 33x12.5x15 tires and not have them rub?

and next, i dont wheel all the time, but when i see a sticky level b road i like to hammer it sometimes! id like to spend less than $200 a tire so i still have breathe room for a cam. i was kind of leaning towards bfg a/t's, and general grabbers look pretty badass (not grabber at2's but regular grabbers)

SO! what works well with fairly good pavement manners and some ok mud slinging capabilities? what do you guys run? pics are always nice
THANKS GUYS!!

Im about to install Federal Couragia MT 285/75-16 on my 75 highboy for $150.00 a piece installed, yea they are only D rated but can hold up to 3,000lbs per tire. Not bad they are about a 33 inch tire.

Bite per dollar, you can't beat a set of Super Swampers..........just not very "road freindly"............but if you want to sling mud............can't beat them.

Stock height you can fit 33's so with the lift you have you can put atleast 35's under it. Superswampers are great for mud. But if you go swamper route get the TSL radials they will do good on and off. Or the BFGs A/T alot of the truck pull guys use them.

im not hardcore enough to run superswampers guys- i need some decent road manners with out the crazy road noise and bouncing. i tried some used swamper thornbirds in high school because the were the most agressive looking tire i could find, but aggressive LOOKING was ALL they were. i had to air them down to like 4-6 lbs to get them to bite with the side lugs, and they were downright worthless in the snow! the abs would kick on everytime i would touch the brakes because they were so damn slippery....
regular tsl's look like they kick *** but thats pretty much top end top price mud tire. this isnt a purpose built mudder, i just like splashing around occasionally.

i think i would be ok with an a/t, but m/t preferably.... also i dont want to spend a ***** ton on tires because where i wheel theres almost always sharp rocks and random metal- i dont wanna bawl when i rip the sidewall out of a $300 super swamper!
lastly, i get a ton of mixed answers on whether a 33 will fit under stock- this isnt a highboy, its just a regular channel framed half ton with 1.5" lift springs. do u guys have any pics of what a 33 looks like under stock ride?
thanks SO much guys! i really appreciate it!!!!

southernboy, thats a great looking rig man! 33's really look like they belong on that truck! also how wide are those wheels? are they 10" wide?

does anyone know what minimum rim width is for a 12.5 wide tire?

and 73 ford man i was farting around on pirate 4x4 forums as you suggested and mentioning bfg a/t's got me flamed crazy bad! someone even suggested a mod boot me from the forum!! haha, people must really hate those tires!!

i wanna say they are 8inch wide, my tires are 33x12.50x15. im getting some duratracs this friday., ill take a pic of them once i get them mounted. My friends got them now in 35s and its a real great tire, very aggressive looking, its really quiet on the road and is a good tire in the mud.

My tires in this pic are pretty worn

I have cooper discoverer st's and they are decent. Not a super aggressive mud tire, but they do pretty good. I only got them b/c I found a good deal on a used set. I'd rather have the STT's or some other more aggressive tire, but don't want to spend half what the truck is worth on tires.

I can't say anything about road noise, b/c at anything over about 35 mph you can't hear anything in my truck, lol

I've had good results with the Goodyear MT/R tires. They are pretty street friendly and perform better than most offroad. The only thing is they can be expensive new. That's why I dont buy any tire new. I've been able to find 80-90% tread tires for $3-400 off the price of new. It can take some time, but monitoring craigslist should turn up some real good deals.

i agree with sleepy, i have mtr's on my 04 and i absolutely love them on and off road. they do howl alot now that they are getting woren in but i have 20,000 miles on them and i would say i got 85 percent tread on them. i never used a better tire in the snow either.
