2002 Ford Escape XLT 3.0 Fuel problem fix!!!!!
Here is the solution for the 3.0 fuel problem. GET A NEW PCM!!!
Do NOT buy it at the dealer!!! Look for Cardone part number 78-8576F. This is a reman PCM available at most parts stores. You will have to flash this unit at the dealer which is normally 1 labor hour and don't forget to take two keys with you. I've replaced everysensor in the car prior to doing this and finally when i changed the PCM i'm up too 24/hwy as opposed to 14. Your welcome

Just a thought on the suggestion to get a PCM. Seems his fuel economy went up when he was low on oil. Lowered oil will lead to higher engine temperatures.
Based on that, I would have checked the output of the coolant temperature sensor. If the computer thought the engine was cold, it would always be adding extra fuel to compensate for the lowered volatility.
I have no idea how a ECM / PCM change could have such an effect on mileage. Unless it was not working right, but it should either stop working completely or throw a code if the 'checksum' in the ROM comes up incorrect. Makes no sense.
