Thinking about getting a 99 F250 v10

I came across a good deal on a 99 f250 v10 4x4 for $3500. 125000 miles, 3" lift. Comes with NEW S.S. Headers - not installed, a newer hydraulic plow, good body, but needs a fuel pump. What kind of power do these make, I know mpg's gotta suck - but how bad? I only have a 20 mile commute each way, all highway, so not too concerned with mpgs. Think its a good deal? How dependable/easy to work on are these engines?

My 03 v10 was getting 8.5 mpg with the front hubs locked right before it blew. I just got my new motor today. It is a beauty and will be installed this weekend. I hope the economy is better. My commute is 6.2 miles one way. (notice I rounded to the .10 mile)

I dunno.

I have read that the pre-2003 models had a mis-engineered cylinder head that tends to blow sparkplugs because only four threads of aluminum hold them in.

I have a 99 F250 Super Duty extended cab and drive 24 miles one-way to work. It consumes a tank of gas through the week...and with prices at $3.99 in our neck of the woods it's pretty pricey. Been thinking about down sizing, but I also have a hydraulic plow (great for ND), and just leaving the truck parked until I need it.

no biggie, just had one blow out of my 98 4.6l F150. Plug number 3, took about 2 hours to repair. I should plan on pulling the heads and installing inserts then, huh? I would only use it once/twice a week for pulling toys and plowing.

I have a '99 V10 that I have owned for about 8 years. Originally it had 33K miles on it, it now has just shy of 100K. It has been very dependable. My truck has never spit a plug. I know it happens, but it isn't inevitable. I changed my plugs at 75K and followed the correct procedure that is outlined in this forum. The other potential trouble spot is the exhaust studs. See the posting this section of the forum for a technical discussion that Krewat started. It is a difficult job without a lot of clearance. I did have to replace all my exhaust studs, not a fun job. This is probably why the headers are not installed on the truck you are considering. Another potential trouble spot is the ball joints. They tend to go out at 60K miles.

All that said, I love my V10. It pulls my RV trailer easily. It delivers around 10-12 MPG around town and 7-10 towing my trailer. I did change my gearing from the 373s to 430s. It was well worth the cost. FYI, my truck is 2WD as I didn't need 4WD just to tow my trailer. My recommendation is to go for it. Later models (2005?) did fix the plug issue. The exhaust stud issue is a pain if you do it yourself and expensive if you have a shop do it. Mine cost me $1,400. On the plus side, I think I saved myself a few hours in purgatory burning off all the cuss words I didn't use. The ball joints are not a huge expense but you should be aware of the issue. Good luck.

Sounds like a pretty good deal.

Hard to say on fuel mileage without knowing what gears and tire size.

The V10s are very dependable. The plugs only come out when they are installed wrong, its not an engineereing problem. The other thing is oil and filter. I have seen tons of these engines ruined from running the wrong oil and filter.
Go with Motorcraft plugs and install them right, run a motorcraft or wix oil filter and motorcraft 5w20 oil. If you do that the engine will outlast just about every other part of the truck.

99s made the least power at 275 HP. With cams and intake manifold out of an 00-04 ( if its an Ex 00-05, if its a van 00-11) you
will have 310. A tune from Mike at 5 star will make a very noticable power gain too.

I just sold my 99' and bought a new 6.8 last fall. My 99' was great. Always got 10-14 mpg in rural driving and usually 9-11 mpg towing 10k. It was and is a nice truck. I sold it to a friend of mine.
It actually got better mpg than my new truck. The only thing about the truck you are buying is the mods. I usually avoid buying modified trucks as performance and economy can sometimes suffer.
A 6.8 will go double those miles if it was properly cared for.

I love my 2001 F-250 SD 4X4. I like the V10 power and yes the mileage sucks but its reliable. Ive replaced the plugs once since Ive owned it.I didn't need to but I did anyway use Motorcraft! The manifold studs were broke when i bought it. Its common, I had a friend do the work and it saved me lots $$$$. I'd check yours. It can pull and drag anything I'll ever need it for. I can tread in snow up to my bumper and it wheels great too. Excellent well built truck.
