Valve replacement

Hi,

I have been posting on here and just doing some preliminary work before rebuilding my 351M. I just took the valve springs and such off my cylinder head and discovered that there is carbon build-up on the valves. I was wondering if I should reuse the valves with the carbon build-up on them or just replace them. I plan on porting and polishing my heads too. I know that a good set of valves can be had for about $80 for the exhaust and $80 for the intake.

What are your opinions?

Thanks,

Chris

If they haven't been ground before they should have plenty of stock left on them. A bead blasting will make them look like new.

multi-groove or single groove ? if it's multi-groove replace them with single groove for a better grip. Just finish to rebuild my head and the multi-groove were so worn that i almost lost 3 valves into the cylinder.

I just redone my heads. I replaced all the valves with single groove valves. 3 angle valve job took out the "bumps" in the exhaust port and opened them up to match the header gasket. I was told to leave the intake side alone, they flow nicely and you need the velocity to help fill the cylinder. I used Crane springs, retainers and valve locks, full roller rockers guide plates and screw in studs ( for a roller cam). Good luck in your build. John

Just curious, when you say single groove and tripple groove, you are talking about the groove that the valve locks fit into?
