1966 f-100 tranny

Hey I'm new here so I really don't know what I'm doing. I am wondering if anybody can tell me what transmission I need. I have a 352 v-8 with a 4speed on the floor. I want to put in an automatic transmission with a shifter on the floor. Is this possible?

Ford Made a COM and C6 to fit the 352 360 390 410 427 428 FE Bell Pattern. It is specific to the FE engine family.

There are also aftermarket bell housings out there to mount fords C4.

Gennie Shifter makes a hot rod floor shift for the C6 as does B&M, and other aftermarket manufacturers.
Lokar makes a hot rod shifter for C4s
The COM can be shifted with B&M ratchet shifters and the like.

If I were thinking of going to an auto again it would be to the C6. There are a lot more C6s out there should you need something.

Just a thought, Should a power steering/disc brake upgrade be in your future, a 73-76 FE/C6 could be a better price point upgrade, you would get the column with the shift selector that you need too.

Scope out yards for one or as John advises purchase an entire donor truck. FEs came in trucks till the 76 model year.

If you get a car trans it will need to be modified with a internal truck shifter and arm as the pattern is different when using a stock column. If you go aftermarket on floor it don,t matter.

I typically find builder FE C6 for about 125 to 150 and have them bench rebuilt for another 400.

You will also need to plan for some drive shaft modifications when doing the swap.

I have a C-6 behind my 352 and I really enjoy it. One exciting thing that happened with it was the bushing coming out of the tail piece about an hour and a half away from home. It pushed the seal out of the end of the tranny of course and the fluid was dribbling out and spitting on the exhaust, making some impressive smoke. Not really what you want to see in your rear view mirror. My tranny guy fixed me up with another tail pice and checked things out for under $100!
