AOD

Is The 4x4 Tail housing a long or short? I need to change from 4x4 to 4x2. Is the output/tail shaft the same length on all AODs?

It is flanged on a 4x4 AOD, to mount to the T case, I don't believe there is a short or long. Car(Mustang) ext housings are shorter that truck/Lincoln ext housings.

So did they make a 4x4 aod and a 4x2 aod? Are there two distinctly different aod transmissions? Or is just the housing the difference? Can I change the housing?

You can change the housing. You also have to change the output shaft. EVERYTHING has to come out of the transmission to change the output shaft.

For someone that has disassembled and reassembled several transmissions it isn't hard at all. For someone that never did it, it can be done with a good manual.

ATSG Transmission Repair Manuals . and Helm Incorporated: Choose Product Category are the two I recommend.
