Plowing with a 93 f150 4x4?

Hey guys, I am looking to put a plow on my 1993 f150 4x4 ext. Cab 5.0l, Ive heard people say "oh it's a half ton so you cant plow with it" but iv also seen people plowing with broncos and full size blazers, so Im just wondering if my truck can handle a plow?, any response is apreciated, thanks

Yeah, my brother plows with his quad! I see everything plow where I live. Gas, Diesels, 1/2 tons to 1 tons. The 150's/1500's I see all look like they need some front suspension lift/help. I'd be most concerned with keeping the (auto) trans cool and not beating the heck out of the driveline any more than you need to.

Go for it!

well the problem is if you frame has been weakend by rust. the frame is heaftier on the 3/4 and 1tons. Not to mention they have heavier duty suspension in the front to hold up the weight of the plow. my neighbor uses a 1/2 ton but he sprung for the plow with a poly face to take some of the weight off. I think he also reinforced some weak points on the frame with 1/4in steel before mounting. do what you want but I have seen plenty of hack job mounts that end up putting stress on 1/2 frame and end up breaking them.

Thanks for the response guys, I am planning on getting either some 2" lift springs for the front end or just getting some off a 2wd f250, I'm thinking that a 7'6" blade should be plenty for my truck and I'll probably put in a tranny cooler when i get the money

I have a "driveway" that's over 100' long and from 10' to 20' wide. I have a plow blade attachment for my garden tractor and I plow with that.

I plowed with a 86 F150 for years.. Until it found a ford probe in the middle of the road at about 35 MPH one snowy night. Loved it. However now I run a F250 and I think I will stick with the 3/4 ton truck for plowing. They just sit higher and can handle the beating a little bit more.

1/2 ton can handle a plow but you gotta get a lighter weight 7ft 6in or 6ft 6in or 7ft. You want a lighter duty blade, a residential type not a commercial.

You will want to beef up the front, either with airbags, springs off a 3/4 or 1 ton 2wd or something. The plow will make that sucker sag liek you wouldnt believe.

Also, your gonna want to strengthen the frame if its all beat and rust and get a big trans cooler. Always plow with OD off too..

I had to put weights on the rear wheels of my tractor so it would have traction.

I had a plow on a 150 when I lived up north, your best bet is to completely box your frame, encaase all of your wiring in rubber hose, buy a plow with a poly blade, and put airbags in the front, rear also if you intend to use a salt spreader. Mine was a 78 and pretty rusty when I got it. I fabbed my own mounts and the 390 that was in it didn't seem to mind.

Like i previously stated/illuded to:

Check for cracks in the front part of the frame. Look over it carefully b/c 1/2 ton truck chassis's tend to crack and break under the strain of a plow. Especially when salt has been eating the frame after many winters in the midwest... If you are going with a 1/2 ton frame I suggest getting some plate steel and a welder and box in the front frame for extra support. Like the guys on "Trucks" did with the little Ford Ranger...

Here is a link of kinda what to do... You can see in the first pic how they turned a "C" channel frame into a boxed in frame. It's pretty easy to do... Just make cardboard cut outs of the pieces you need then transfer to metal plate (1/4in or 3/16in suggested). Cut out your plates and welde them in... Being careful not to burn up anything important (ie wiring, bushings, hoses, etc...)
