truck wont start.

I have a 1997 F-150 with a 5.4 liter, automatic trans. that wont start.
When I turn the key to the on position everything works like normal. When I turn the key to the start position, the radio and other power accessories go off like normal, but the starter doesnt do anything. It seems like the battery power isnt reaching the starter. With the hood open, I can hear a clicking noise coming from somewhere around the power distribution box while trying to start the truck. Has anyone experienced this problem before or know what could be wrong?

So far here is what I have tried with no luck........
1. Checked and made sure the battery was good.
2. Checked fuses....In the truck-#21 starter relay. In the power distribution box-#20,21 instrument panel fuse panel ingition switch feed, #22 I/P fuse panel battery feed. All these fuses look good.
3. Replaced the Primary battery fuses.
4. Replaced the solenoid under the hood next to the battery.

I am thinking the problem may be either the ignition switch or maybe the switch that prevents the vehicle from starting in drive or reverse doesnt realize its in park.

Pull the starter out and have it tested. Bet that is your problem.

Or the cable from the solenoid to the starter. The truck is old enough that the lower terminal end may be junk, and won't carry the power.

You usually do not need the whole cable. Just check the terminal end that attaches to the copper stud on the starter. Typically, the stranded cable wire corrodes right out of the lug. Lose too many strands, and not enough juice can get to the starter.

Just out of curiosity, can you turn the engine with a ratchet on the crank bolt. Wouldn't be the first engine I've seen that was locked up somehow.

Did you actually test the starter relay, or swap it for a known good one ?

The truck is fixed.

The problem was the cheapest, easiest repair I have ever had to make. Too bad I couldnt figure it out sooner.

Under the steering wheel there is a plug similar to the OBD II plug. It has a little plastic piece which plugs into it. This plug wasnt pushed in all the way. Pushed it in and the truck started, take it off and no start.

It must be some type of a kill switch the previous owner installed and didnt tell me about. Ive had this truck a few years and cant believe I have never noticed it or experienced this situation before.

I took a picture to show you guys but cant figure out how to upload it into the thread.
Thanks for the help.
