Question on Missouri Taxes
I lived in Missouri for just over 2 years and left in December of 2009. I got a tax bill for my truck in November so I called and asked what to do with it. They told me to send in my Texas registration with the bill and I'd owe nothing, which is what I did.
Now I have another tax bill with a bunch of late fee's and interest because I did not register my truck in Texas until February of 2009. After going round and round with the bureaucrats, I can't prove that I left in December of 2009 so they say I owe the money. It looks to me like the only leverage they have over people to pay this ridiculous tax is that you can't get license plates without a tax receipt. If so, why should I pay anything? I don't need Missouri plates and as long as I don't plan to ever return to the state, which I don't, then what can they do? Has anyone ever faced this before? If so, how did you solve it?
Thanks.

If you dont pay then you want be able to renew your drivers license when it comes due. I found that out first hand. I owed money to minnesota back in the 80's and didnt pay cause i figured i was never going to live in that state ever again. Last yr my DL needed to be renewed and 23 yrs later i couldnt until i paid them 600.00 it was 200.00 at the time. My suggestion is pay cause with todays technology they will get it one way or another.

When I left, I visited friends in New Mexico for the holidays and then arrived in Texas after the first of the year (I know, a strange route to Texas). Being that I stayed in my camper at the campground run by best friend, I didn't pay anything for rent so I have no proof until January of 2010.
I don't really have a problem paying the tax since I didn't understand the law like I should have. It's the extra fees they are now charging me because it's late that really burns me up. I would have paid it on time if the over-paid pencil neck bureaucrat had not told me that I didn't owe anything.
Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just pay it and be done with it so I don't have this crop up later and cost me $1,200 instead of $600.

Sorry for the dang Mo laws, but yea sounds like paying it now will be better than later. Wish I had better advice, did you call around to different license place's for help?
What if your friend wrote you a bill showing residence elsewhere? Would they accept that as proof you were outa state?
Best of luck......
