Hey everyone. In March I'm moving from Alaska to Albuquerque. Just wondering if this chapter ever does any get togethers or helps each other with truck repairs or mods. Also, does any of you snowmachine (snowmobile) down there?
Let me say welcome to NM. I know people around the state do snowmobile, but I don't know where at. I think a lot of them might go up to Colorado where there is generally a lot more snow.
We've tried to do big get togethers, but usually ours are more like two or three members getting together to work on a truck. Where are you moving to and why New Mexico?
Well, we've got a slight delay in our travel. We fully loaded (GVWR of 20k) and on the morning of day 4 I noticed oil dripping out of my exhaust. So my turbo shaft seal took a crap on us and we're stuck in Fort Nelson BC until we can get a new turbo shipped in here. Should hopefully have one by Tuesday or Wednesday and then gotta fight the cold while installing it. Gonna go with a 38R.
The only thing I can't decide on with the 38R is if I should go with the 1.0 A/R exhaust housing or the 1.15 A/R exhaust housing. I was thinking the 1.0 because of the elevation in NM but was also thinking that the OBS trucks have a 1.15 housing. How do the OBS trucks do with the altitude down there?
Sorry to hear this, Todd. Do you have a 7.3? I'm not familiar with the 38R. I would advise sticking with the stock housing diameter. I made the mistake of getting a slightly smaller housing for mine for quicker spoolup. It does work and it spools up FAST! But if I ever upgrade injectors, I'd have to go back to stock for better EGT control. I'd say go to the board for your vintage and ask there if you haven't already. As far as elevation, it won't make a noticeable difference. Air here is clean (when it ain't windy - lots of dust) and if you have a free breathing intake and exhaust your turbo will have all the air it needs!
Yeah, I got the 7.3. The 38R is the upgraded (ball bearing) version of the stock turbo. The stock turbo has a .84 A/R turbine housing and the 38R has a 1.0 A/R exhaust housing. Got it ordered, now just waiting for it to get here so I can put it on.
