The push rod engine is the OHV. It's the SOHC that had timing chain/cassette issues.
For darn near indestructible go with a 5.0 AWD or 2wd. I have a '97 Mountaineer 5.0 AWD with 250k miles and the transmission has never been touched nor the engine other than routine maintenance. The 4r70w is a great transmission and look how long the Windsor engines have been around.

98 4.0L, automatic.... Daily work truck and lots of rough backroads... Still pumping strong at 260,000 km.... also, tows landscape trailer daily... towed my bassboat all over Ontario for a few seasons as well.....
balljoints, frontend is only issue, besides that.... I'll keep it when I buy my new Ford and turn it into a plow truck.... Starts everyday to go to work..
