Hi all, I'm new to the thread posting but i thought that i'd share my project with you. I've been reading other threads about people doing a similar build. Heres what i started with, I picked up a 77 crew 2wd short box that someone had put a 79 grill on.

 

Here she is.

 

The PO had installed a olds 455 rocket, so that had to go... i began searching for a cummins turbo diesel. After several weeks i found a first gen that was in a 1990 w250. A friend and i split on the truck because he wanted the drive drain and tranny, and i wanted the engine.

 

As well as the cummins conversion, i planned on doing a 4x4 conversion. I have quite a few 4x4 axles and parts, but all dana 44s and dana 44hds. With the weight of the cummins i figured that i needed a 60 up front. After a long search i managed to buy a 1979 F250 snowfighter for 500 bucks!!! What a score!!!

that super cab looks pretty rotted out, thats too bad. atleast it will get you some needed parts. im keeping the d44 under my cummins. keep the pics coming and check out my build. doing the same thing with a regular cab

Atfer getting the matched set of 60s from under the snow fighter i had to decide what i was to run for gears. My crew had a dana 60 with 3.55 gears, and the snow fighter axles had 4.10s. I decided that i would go with the 4.10s after doing a little calculating, seeing that i was going to run a taller tire. The next question was what rear 60 was i going to use. I had noticed that my crew frame (2wd) was almost identical to a 4x4 hi-boy frame (with the exception of some crossmembers) with the narrow rear frame. That meant that my new 4.10 60 was not going to be a bolt in.

 

the difference is spring pad location. With your talk about converting to 4wd and a cummins this should be no sweat for you...

 

Thanks Chasetruck74, i've been reading your thread and you have a pretty cool machine in the works.

 

i plan on running the stock 410s in mine with 35 inch tires. i have a zf5 im backing it with and the OD is .76 IIRC. that puts me at about 65mph at 1800 IIRC. it was about perfect for me.

 

you are right, i've done this many times before, but my original axle appeared to be much cleaner, in better shape, it had more gussets on the pumpkin, so i decided to swap the 4.10s into it. When i did this i also installed a detroit/eaton tru-trac.

 

impalaslayer, i also am running a zf5 with a destroked adaptor, so my numbers are simmilar to yours...

 

nice, i got my adapter from a van, didnt wana shell out the cash for the destroked if i didnt have to

 

i know it was expensive, i was going to machine my own, but i was just too busy... i am millwright by trade and have my own machine/fabrication shop.
