1977 crewcab cummins build
#256
Its been a while since i've posted, but the last couple of months have been extrememly busy for me. I have accomplished some stuff though. I've been doing some welding on the box. I recently moved it from my house garage to my fab shop so i can take an afternoon and try and finish it good enough to bolt on the truck and let the body guy to take over. I almost have my exhaust finished. I fabbed custom stainless mounts and hangers and got the stove pipe tacked up and sitting in place. Now all i have to do take it back down and doo the final welding, which will only take ten minutes of so. I'll get some pics as soon as i can for you guys. I also have been doing some minor wiring clean up. hopefully more updates and pics soon.

Heres some of the pics i promised. The exhaust pipe is made out of 3 1/2" stainless steel tubing (with about a 16 ga wall thickness) and a piece of 3 1/2" stainless steel flex pipe. The flex attaches to my custom down pipe and gets me over my tranny crossmember and then flexes down so the rest of the pipe clears my t-case crossmember.
I fabbed the hangers out of 10ga ss.
I removed it from the truck last night and i'm headed to the shop today so hopefully i'll get a chance to finsh the tig welding on it and get it installed for good.

Butt weld. It reminded my why i hate body work. welding the thin metal is a pain in the butt. I have .035 wire in my mig right now, but if i'm going to be welding lots of body panels i will switch to .030 or .025 wire. For some spots where there was to big of a gap i had my buddy hold a piece of brass on the other side where i was welding. This allows my to fill the gap and the weld wont stick to the brass.

I found the pipe and the flex at one of the local scrap metal yards. sometimes its amazing what you can find when you dig in the stainless steel bin. I think the pipe (which was 10' long with a swooping 90 on both ends) and the flex cost me 50 bucks. Its going to be straight pipe for now. i was amazed at how quiet the cummins was with just the down pipe, i can't wait to hear it with the complete pipe on.

Just luck. I think that someone scrapped an automatic carwash or something. My friend actually called me and told me they were there. He found and bought the same pipe and knew i would want one as well. He's actually builing a cummins crew as well. I found him a 78 crew F350 (long box) and hes done a 4x4 and cummins swap as well. He used a dodge front 60 and drive train. He has the best luck at the scrap yards.... hes found at least 4 front dana 60's.
