7.3 IDI Turbo help

Hey I'm just looking to get some help clearing things up on IDI Turbo hookups.

Right now I'm rebuilding my 7.3 idi after a bad turbo hookup blow out my head gaskets, I've been told it was because it needed a Blow-off valve and a wastegate, but I've also been told i don't need a blow-off valve I only need a wastegate cause it does the job of both? So what I'm asking is do I need to get a blow-off valve and a wastegate to hook my turbo back up? or do i just need to get a wastegate?.....also does it matter what kind of turbo you use on an idi...right now I'm using a sidewinder turbo, is there a better turbo to be using out there?....I know some turbos have builtin wastegates, anything you guy's can tell me would me great...I don't want to be pulling off the 110 pound heads again.

Boost guage and a controller built in the right boot is the cheapest thing, or you can turn down your fuel to limit the boost. How much boost are you running you may just need to stud it.

The sidewinder turbo should of had a waste gate mounted on it.

I have a 70mm turbo on my mustang. I run a blow off. On a diesel, i'm almost sure you don't need one. You do NEED a waste gate, either in the cold side piping or on the turbo.

Would a waste gate on the exhaust leading into the turbo work?......or would it just be a better idea to put it on the pipe going to my intake?.......I've never worked on a turbo diesel before so I'm in the dark

If it was a Banks sidewinder it would say it and have a wastegate. More than likely it may be the old original Banks turbo kit that did not have a wastegate nor does it need it. Post a pic or describe it the best you can. Does it have a big square aircleaner box that sit's on the top of the engine and say Banks?

Sidewinder:

First Gen Banks:

Look like any of these?

In the intake would be the blow off, on a diesel you do not need that.

^^^ See in the picture where I have the welding clamp on for a ground? THAT's where my waste gate ended up. I had to go to a external waste gate since my turbo did not have one built in.

^^^ That is what you SHOULD have. A turbo with a wastegate built-in. All you need to do with them is have a vacuum line connected to the little port. When you go into boost, the waste gate moves the rod and limits the amount of boost going into the engine.

That's it,...the guy I bought the truck off of had the turbo running into the old non-turbo intake hat...I plan on making a new intake hat....or just seeing if I can get one from ATS....I'm guessing this was a home-made turbo kit sence he had the turbo going into the old intake hat....also my truck is a stick...do I have to worry about back pressure from the turbo when shifting gears...or will the waste gate take care of that...if so it sounds like all i need to get is an external waste gate and I'm done.

You have a non-wastegated turbo. Just like I do, so yea your going to need a external waste gate IF you plan to keep this turbo.

UNIVERSAL jdm'S 38MM 6psi TURBO MANIFOLD WASTEGATE : eBay Motors (item 370333462089 end time Mar-13-10 18:15:00 PST)

That would mount in the exhaust tubing as it's going into the turbo. That one has a 6psi spring, so you'd see roughly 6 psi on your gauge. If you wanted more, you'd need to buy a boost controller.

Ok well, I'm used to a gas turbo'd car. So my info is only based on that. How is boost regulated then? If i ran mine with no wastegate, it'd make 30+psi and blow my motor to pieces.

This is good news to hear......6psi sounds fine to me...I've heard running high psi in an IDI isn't vary good anyway......and the waste gate will take care of back pressure when shifting?

Well, wait till "starmilt" posts. Because apparently, I'm wrong. I'm used to gasoline turbo'd cars. Diesels are new to me, so gotta wait and see what he say's.
