Tires....omg i am lost!!!

I have a 2001 Excursion V-10 4x4 and it has baja a/t wide track lt285/75r16 load range D tires on it, The co-worker I bought it from just put these tires on less than a year ago. So here is my problem, he said that he ran the tires at 55 psi for his wife as a every other day driver and it looked like the tread was a uniformed wear. Well I bought this to pull my 4500lbs travel trailer, but now I have my car in the shop so I have to drive it daily. I have read that to tow my trailer I needed to run the max pressure "65psi"
and that is what I left it at "65psi" but now I am having center tire wear, should I move all four tires back down to 55psi and inflate to 65psi when we pull the camper? I know this is all over the net but I am lost in the sea of information?

I've had my tires at about 50-52 psi and tire wear has been perfect so far (about 9k miles). A 4500 pound trailer is not enough to be adjusting tires for IMO, no matter how tongue heavy it is. 55 psi should do you just fine towing that load. Matter of fact, look at your drivers door tags...it'll tell you 45 front, 55 rear for the standard tires. Your 285s in D range have similar ratings weight wise.

I agree with intenseJ, it won't hurt to just run 50 or 55 psi. I only run about 35 in mine around town driving, and about 45psi towing, but my tires are a bit different.

I run 70-75psi at any given time. I forget what load range, but it's the right one, which I think was E. It rides exactly like a truck. I can feel every pebble I run over. I'm ok with that.

Ive got three friends with Excursions, and they use them like trucks, so they all run tires with load range E, which like Jay says, you feel stuff, but one friend of mine said the D range tires were very squirrelly.

I've got D's on mine and they handle and ride better than the Firestone Transforce AT E range tires which were on there before. The Firestones had significantly more steering wander and no matter what air pressure I ran it did not improve. I run my D's at 65 and my Ranchos at 3 and the ride is fantastic.

So with the D's, you pull that yacht in your sig? I am at a crossroads of what to buy. I'm lifting it and adding 35's to it, and there are only 2 choices for a load E, but many for load D. What is the load rating for your D's?

Look at the lbs rating on the D and compare it to stock. 295/75/16 D has the exact same lbs rating as stock E.

I'm wishing it was - only 27 feet! The MT ATZ's are rated at 3305 a tire (285/75) @ 65 psi which I always run. I've been very pleased with them so far - ride great, handle well and tow very well. I don't do much off-road - just beach driving and they do extremely well. What size 35's you looking for on what rims? Nitto makes great tires (dune or terra grapplers), the Toyo Open Country's are doing well - both the Nitto and Toyo with both wear and traction.

The short answer is the tire is rated at a specific load capacity at a given air pressure (ie: 3415 @ 80psi). This means the tire is rated to carry 3415 lbs if inflated to 80psi cold and that maximum inflation is the only way to get the maximum load capacity. For the best wear it can depend on driving habits, loading of the truck, alignment, etc. Every truck may be a little different. Do a search on 'chalk test' and it will give you a little insight into getting the best footprint down on the ground and the best treadwear.

I'm running the terra graplers on my 98 4runner for 3 years now and love them. They're good in snow, and wear great. I have 17x9 Dick cepek dc2's and considered the new trail grapplers in a 35x12.5. They're even E rated.
