78 F250 rear brake drum

Hey all

First time doing the rear brakes on my 78 F250. Is there a trick to getting the rear drums off? Do I have to take the axles out to do it? Wasnt really planning on going that far but will if I have to.

Thanks

Forgot to add it is a dana 60. Finally found something with the search. Looks like I may or may not have to pull the bearing but do need to pull the axles one way or the other.

Thanks all

remove the axle shafts, undo the spindle/bearing nuts, back off the brakes remove drum.. drain pan recommended unless you jackone side way up to keep diff fliud in.. also good time to check bearings and replace inner seal...part of owning a dana rear axle..

Thanks for the info. Pulled drums off to check to see if wheel cylinders leaking. Brake pedal goes to the floor when sitting at stop light. Brakes looked great, bearings in great condition, no leaks. Looks like PO actually did go through bearings and brakes like he said. Still had problem after bleeding brakes. Looked to add more fluid and noticed fluid dripping down side of reservoir. Yelled at son for over filling. Then took a look at cover and gasket and were corroded as heck. Went to Napa and they only had the gasket. Cleaned up cover and installed and pressure seems much better. A lot of work when only had to replace a easy gasket. Uggg. But it ok made 17 year old son and 16 year old daughter help. Also installed new tube bumper/light bar and looks good.

Have a good night all

"Brake pedal goes to the floor when sitting at stop light"--------Chances are it is the master cylinder.........unless you are actually pumping the fluid out of the system somewhere.

I'm assuming the 'brake job' is done. What WAS NOT mentioned was, the brakes. Standard or HD ? The HD were dual piston front and 1/2" smaller & 1/2" wider rear shoes/drums. I found that out years ago. AND the (vacuum) booster is deeper.

mine is a d70 dually rear axle . but its the same as the d60 i replaced as far as the brakes go. The only diff was the width of the shoes that i used . all of the other stuff like springs an adjusters were the same .

if you need new drums, you will have to drive out the wheel studs to separate the drums from the hubs. i felt really stupid when i finally figured that one out.

I think I was just pumping the fluid out of the top of the reservoir. The gasket was in bad shape and there was fluid and corrosion dripping over the side. Was big drips, just wet and could tell it has been leaking for a bit. When it goes to the floor at the stop light, it is a slow process not all at once. The back brakes looked great fairly new pads, no leaks at the wheel cylinders, drums looked good, just a bit of dust that is now cleaned up. After replacing the gasket pedal pressure is much better and doesnt fade when stopped for a time.

Dont know if they ar HD or not, not sure how to check that out, but everything looked good. Did have some wetness where the brake line crossed over to the right rear drum where it crosses the top of the differential. Looked like it may have been rubbing a bit. Pulled the line away and cleaned everything off and no leaks on the brake line found. Hoping just wet there trapped from before.
