2007 5.4L 3V oil consumption

Hello, everyone. First time poster. I just recently got my first truck which is a 2007 Ford F-150 with the 5.4L 3V engine. I wasn't the one that last changed the oil, but my Grandad changed the oil back in June with Valvoline 5W-20 (not sure if it's full synthetic) and I noticed that now with 4,200 miles after the oil change it has used about 25% of a whole quart in that period of time. I was just wondering if that was normal. Power is great. No trouble to start or anything. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

1/4 quart in just over 4000 miles normal, how many miles on truck. IMHO always use motorcraft 820s filters and 5w20 oil. Pretty cheap at wallyworld for motorcraft blend oil and filter.

Thanks for the fast reply!! My truck is just about to roll over to 53k. And yeah, I'll probably go back with Motorcraft next time. Everything seems to be fine though. It is getting 23.8 MPG at 62 MPH. I was just worried since this is my first truck and I don't know much about these new engines.

You must have a lot of tailwind or all downhill to be getting 23.8mpg. The Motorcraft oil and filters work fine as you change it often as recommended.

Well, I have Magnaflow exhaust on it and I was reading it off that digital meter. I had been driving around town for about 10 minutes with it on and when I got out on flat ground it was showing 23.8 MPG at 62 MPH and it has showed that several times. So idk if it's right or not. Thanks!

To tell you the truth, while your truck uses a tiny bit of oil and may "seem normal", a really well-tuned and very well-kept truck will use zero oil between changes.

I've seen a 300,000+ mile pickup that used no oil whatsoever between regular changes. Original engine and tranny just taken care of very, very well.

If your using a 1/4 of a quart now, then how much will it be burning/leaking in 50,000 miles? Or in another 100k? Sometimes a little use of oil is just the beginning...

Well, that kind of depends on how I drive it and how I maintane if it's actually burning any from going past the piston rings. I maintenence this truck very well. I have seen F-150s with less miles than mine use more oil than that. I just posted this to see what everyone else thought. When I first checked the oil level which was back in early December was 1/4 quart low and I've put about 800-1,000 miles on it since then. I checked it once again today and It hasn't used a drop. So, I don't know.

Well My 2007 5.4 has 50,000 miles and uses 1 quart of oil every 5,000 miles. I use motorcraft oil filter and full synthetic 5w20. I read on here that 1 quart was normal or in spec for these types of trucks. I have really never seen that but I did see people saying it was normal... I also keep up with maintanance. air filter, fuel fliters, and tranny flush..

I'm sure there is variance from one engine to another, and the assembly line can't make them all perfectly the same and "oil tight". I guess maybe I'm a lucky one. Haven't had anything I've owned leak or burn oil. Only exception, a few lawnmowers maybe.

Yeah, they're all a little different. My Dad has a '99 model Dodge Ram with a 90% rebuilt 318 V8 engine. Everything but the block and crankshaft was replaced and it uses about a 1/2 quart every 3,000 mile changes. Like you said, there is a variance.

Have had a 97,99,2000,2001 2003,2005 and now a 2008. all 5.4 4x4 3.73. Motorcraft filter and oil every 4500 miles. Trucks are driven a lot, current 08 has 1005 thousand, get blackstone reports every 30 k and every truck used 1/4 to 3/4 quart between changes. The Blackstone reports have always come back with a good report, most manufactures are ok with a quart consumption between changes....never been a big follower of high milage changes.
I always change my own oil..when was the last time the tech came in to tell you you were low on oil when he dropped the plug?

Nope. Manufacturing variations does cause some engines to use some oil. More engines use a "tiny bit" of oil than use zero oil. I've had cars that used a little oil from the day they were made to long after they passed 200,000 miles and passed on the the next owner.

What does "well tuned" have to do with oil consumption?
